I just saw Cloverfield and I had to run home and start a thread in General warning people because of how it affected me. I've never had a movie affect like this one did. And I've seen a lot of messed up movies......I'm new to the anxiety arena. I've had a few anxiety attacks over the last year so I put this forum on my favorites view but never posted. This movie just totally messed me up and I don't know for sure why. It was just so real, and where it was filmed and everything, ugh.....I'm still nauseous, thought I'd get sick but didn't.

This is just very new to me.....thought you guys would have some good insight.

Please read the thread about Cloverfield and please be very cautious if you go see it and you suffer from anxiety. I need HUGS.

Huh! Thanks for the warning. I don't even know what it's about - you don't have to tell us. I have to be so careful about movies anymore - about everything! It bites!!! Man, i don't know about y'all, but it feels like so much life is cut off or restricted because of all the panic-causing, trigger-starting things out there.
*frustrated*

Hmmm...I'm sorry that happened. I would gather to say...that you just may be an H.S.P. {highly sensitive person} I am an H.S.P. on a very high scale and have to just stay away from triggering or emotionally draining circumstances. I suggest you find out more about your unique trait/gift and learn how to sense and avoid these situations in the future. To be this way is not a flaw...though others "stigma" may try to make you believe this. It is a beautiful gift of empathy and feeling. You just have to know what to let in and what to avoid.
If you care to discuss this further, feel free to p.m.
regards of peace...d

You say you saw Blair Witch though, so it wasn't just the hand-held camera? Some people find that just irritating and some nauseating because their brain can't take the shaking/viewpoint.

It's not my kind of movie, the premise and location, etc. I hate not being able to see "well" so would have hated the camera and it would have made me angry. I would have wanted to snatch it out of someone's hand and been pissed I'd be unable to :-)

Yeah I agree with the fact that I was highly sensitive to the location and premise of the movie and thats probably why it got to me so bad. My boyfriend pointed out too that there were no actors you know in the movie, and the way its shot makes it feel very real. Most movies I'm like yeah, its just a movie. I got upset when I watched Titanic because I know it had actually happened. So I think the fact that this movie was just too similar to real events and filmed in a way that looks real is why it hit me so hard.

I'm glad that I saw it so that I can talk about it with other people who might be badly affected by it, and it also showed me another part of myself, to help me avoid similar situations.

Ahhh.....glad I don't feel like I did last night. Some sleep did me good.

Ray, you know I dig ya so I'm glad you're feeling better. But does the fact that I'm now dying to see this movie make me a bad person? I found myself reading your post and thinking "wow, I need to see this one."

Lol no it doesn't make you a bad person. I'm glad you'll be prepared when you see it though. I think if I had been prepared I would have enjoyed it. I love scary movies, so I just wasn't expecting to react the way that I did.

Thank you for the warning, much appreciated.

I found this in a movie review

</font><blockquote><div id="quote"><font class="small">Quote:</font>
The first thing you need to get used to in "Cloverfield" is the potentially nausea-inducing shaky camera work, which makes "The Blair Witch Project" look like the latest Ken Burns documentary.

</div></font></blockquote><font class="post">

I have an idea about how this can affect us, especially with themes of violence and horror. Or better yet, I can express how it affects me.

I sometimes enjoy supernatural fantasy books, vampires and werewolves and other themes that can involve some scenes of horror. But usually the content doesn't bother me because I am in complete control. I can put the book aside, I can even decide not to read it at all, I can skim through parts I don't like or need.

At a movie, especially with shaky camera work that makes everything feel much much more immediate, my involvement is deeper, my ability to get away is more difficult, and I might even start to feel trapped.

This all can result in being massively overly stimulated. Too many messages that make me feel like I need to flee or fight.

Since I'm socialized to not react immediately, I suppress what I can, but eventually probably all that built up anxiety and fear needs to be dealt with somehow.

I think this is all occuring physically too.

You are doing a cool thing here because you are warning us and you also got a chance to do what often helps people with anxiety - which is to talk it over.

Cedar you just explained perfectly why I was affected so badly. Feeling trapped and frozen to the seat, not being in control.....wow. Yes.

I did notice before my anxiety started getting better, a movie that I pop in all the time bothered my anxiety bad! (The movie was "The Cell") and I had to stop the movie and had an anxiety attack. After the anxiety attack was over, (5 mins) I said to myself "Forget it, i dont want to watch it anyway."

I saw cloverfield myself. I use to be affraid to go to the movies all together (fear of losing myself), There were a few scenes that freaked me out too. I've been through a few natural disasters and I've been to New York City. But, it was the ending that really scared me, like the greeks said there is two stories a comedy and a tradegdy. I guess the tradegdy was getting the girl but still failing, which bothers me to no avail.
