From a young age people in my family have thought I had asperger's due to my obsessiveness over things... except that the only two symptoms I had of an autism spectrum disorder were a) obsessiveness and b) sensory issues. I had no social issues at all-- if anything, I was overperceptive to how other people felt about me.
The problem was that it didn't matter what it was, there was good chance I would obsess over it. Movies, books, people, events... when I learned something new and interesting or liked a movie or book it would just go on and on in my head and I wasn't able to stop it. It wasn't that I just had narrow interests, because my interests were broad, it was just that for days or weeks at a time I would get really "focused" on things, and I wouldn't be able to stop talking about them. I still have this today but it tends to show up more in response to stress, problems, etc... I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety because they do tend to be stressful now, but after my awesome psych professor teaching me more about OCD I've come to realize I'm like this with everything-- sex, movies, classes, friends, etc. It affects my sleep at least once a week because even if I take a sleeping aid I'll be half-asleep with things running through the loop for the third day in a row! Lol. So I was just wondering if other people also had obsessions over movies instead of just their anxieties, and if anyone ever thought or had someone think they had Asperger's as a result of their obsessiveness. I need reassurance that I'm "normal" for OCD, lol.

I don't know about your situation, but I have thought a number of times that some of the symptoms attributed to autism are similar to some of mine... Maybe that is a clue...

In my case i can get quite focussed on something and then just as easily drop that to become quite focussed/ruminative about something else.
I'm not Aspergic as such but in my case the most 'Aspergic' thing about me is my difficulty when it comes to making small talk/initiating and proactively keeping a conversation going.. |
