My anxiety has been out of control lately. So much so that I seriously wonder if I'm going mad or have some "hidden" disease. I am so freaked out. I've been taking Xanax but that has a rebound effect and seems to make you even more anxious when your coming down off of it. I also have Vistaril and Neurontin and was wondering which would work best and have the fewest side effects, how long they take to work and wether or not I can still take a Xanax if I find that they don't work for me so I'm not left just "hanging" there. I've been reading and have heard lots of good things about both but I have no idea which one works best. I'm not looking for "medical advice" just an opinion on which one is most effect against this horrible beast called anxiety.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!! |

Grey, I'm no expert, but I am absolutely floored that they are using neurontin for anxiety! This drug was FDA approved for the symptoms of MS, and my MS support group has had plenty of side effect problems. (BTW the newer A B C drug set up doesn't work for everyone either though.) Just seems that there are better ANXIETY meds out there, but maybe you have tried them.

There is another major health forum out there where people are saying all kinds of good things about Neurontin and how it has helped relieve thier anxiety. I took it once myself (only one capsule) a long time ago just to see if it would help the pain I was having in my leg at the time and had no side effects that I can remember but I've never tried it for anxiety. What is the best drug for anxiety?. I have to do something pretty quick to get this monster under control before it drives me to the brink of insanity. - Regards |

My husband takes Neurontin for Sciatica (he has bulging discs in L4 and L5) and he is still anxious. It has helped the pain but not the anxiety. He is also on Elavil for the depression that goes with the pain but he has only been on that a week so it is too soon to see if it will help with that.

grey goose,
over the years, i've taken them all. every body is different. i could tell you what worked best for me, but it might not for you. you just have to find the one that your body responds the best to. i was on neurontin for pain...horrible side affects. i've been on xanax, valium, vistiril and klonopin. the xanax knocked me out after a couple of hours, but did the trick. i just didn't like having to sleep after i took it (even when i took the lesser dose). valium created a different kind of anxiety about 20 mins after i took it...bad for me...felt like i couldn't breathe good and a weird panic. the klonopin seems to help me very well with the least side affects. i take a 1/2 very rarely and only when needed. the thing about any of these drugs is...if taken regularly they'll lose their ability to help over time unless increased. oh, also, i took vistaril. i was a good drug, but the sleepiness that came with it lasted hours. i do wish you luck in finding a med that works for you. when i was having daily/regular panic/anxiety, the dr told me to take the meds 3 times a day every day to trick brain into not having them regularly. talk to dr about that cause it seemed to work for me. i only take meds for panic about 2-3 times a year now, and still am dealing with an incredibly stressful lilfe. i hope you find the med that will help you. i really do. be safe, kd

First, thank's for all the wonderful responses!!:-).
I'm sure most of you already know about my experience with Cipro and Levaquin from when I posted awhile back so I'll cut to the chase here. After being treated for prostatitis for a month with Cipro and Cipro XR and then another whole month with Levaquin, I am left with sharp aches and pains that breifly come and go throughout my entire body at various times during the day as well as HORRIBLE, debillitating anxiety. I suffered terribly for a week before I thought back to my last few experiences with Quinolones and remembered that I went through this EXACT same thing the last few times where I would finish the last of my Cipro/Levaquin and then within 3-5 days I'd get this little sore throat for a few days followed by debilitating anxiety that just would'nt let up. I should tell you that I already suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, depression, etc but these particular attacks seem to occur consistantly every time I take Quinolones for a month or so and then go off of them. I guess I'd just be interested to hear if anyone else sees a connection here or if I'm just losing my mind. I'm currently taking Xanax, and just today, Vistaril and plan to try some Lexapro if this does'nt let up. The last time I came off of Quinolones, my anxiety got so bad I thought for sure I was going mad and ended up in the ER every day for nearly a week - that's HOW BAD it got. Hope to hear from as many of you as possible regarding this. Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS:-) - Regards, Bill |
