I went to the doctor and met with a Psychiatrist the other day and he put me on these medications. Vistaril and Topamax. For anxiety, moods, depression, and lack of sleeping. So far for the past three days I have been on these medicines and I feel even worse now than I did before. I wake up really irritable, angry, the nightmares and panic attacks are worse, I am in a fog,I feel like I am more depressed, I can't remember much like my passwords online or phone numbers that I have known forever. I will be having a conversation with someone and just trail off because I can't remember what I was talking about. I've just been in a constant state of saddness and I still can't really sleep. I read up on it and people say this side effect will pass but I'm not sure it will. Has anyone ever been on one or the other even both????

Vistaril is simply an antihistamine like Bendaryl. They give this for anxiety as it is nonaddictive, but it's not very effective either.

I don't know what dosage of Topamax you were put on so I can't comment. I know it is given for weight loss and mood.

My suggestion would be to call your doctor and convey your symptoms and express your concerns.

Best of luck to you! Keep in mind that it takes time and sometimes many different meds to try to get the right combination. Don't give up!
Take care,
Okie

They put me on 50 mg at night of both medications. Bad part is they won't even tell me what my diagnosis is. I just feel like I am completely losing my mind anymore and this medication is making it worse. I am suppose to be on 50 mg a night for 2 weeks then increace to 50 in the mornings then at night so 100 mg in total. My family keeps telling me to stick it out and these feelings may go away but in the mean time what am I going to do with my 6 and 3 year old, they won't watch them and their father isn't a big help at all... It is just sooooo very frustrating for me to not have the support and help from people I am suppose to be able to rely on. I know it sounds kind of selfish but me moving home and going back to therapy was their ideas not mine. So they could help me get my life straightened out when now it has been over 2 years and I think things are worse now than before. Well anyway thanks for the post I am just ranting because I am so wired I feel like my insides are jumping around.

I am currently taking Topamax for Bi-Polar. And it usually takes more than just a few days to really start taking affect. But the Topamax has really been very helpful for my Mood Disorder, and I'm taking 100mg.twice a day, but ofcourse I started out at a lower dose, and worked myself up to that higher dose over the years. The memory thing is probably your anxiety, even though Topamax does have the side-effect of effecting your short term memory. It takes being on it for a long time before it starts effecting your memory. It would be really hard to believe that it could effect your memory in only a few days, when it usually takes atleast 3-5 years to effect your memory. So you might want to ask them if your diagnoses is Bi-Polar! I have taken Vistaril in the past, and it is just another antihistamine, like the other member said, it's harmless, it should make you drowsy to help you sleep! High levels of anxiety, and stress can affect your memory as well!
Good luck with everything, and give the Topamax a chance, it's a really good medication for some people, so if you give it a couple more weeks to kick in more, it might start making a difference. It's really been great for me! Anyone ever been on Vistaril and Topamax ???Anyone ever been on Vistaril and Topamax ???

Vistraril is actually a pain medication (& anti naseau) that is given after surgery. It is generic for Hydroxyzine Pam. Had 3 surgeries in the last year & one coming up in 3 weeks & have a script for that & Norco (dosage of Vicodin). Pain medication makes me sick to my stomach (all do from morphine to oxycodone but Norco seems to do it less until I have to take 6 pills a day vs. 4).

Also take Topamax 50 mg in the hopes of losing weight gained on Abilify (50 lbs.). Have bipolar I & also take Lamictal & Trazodone (for sleep) & Klonopin as needed for acute anxiety.
