I was reporting to the doctor that im experiencing weird symptoms as im falling asleep.. basically as soon as i drift off I feel like i can't breathe/my heart beats and skips randomly. Thus i would jerk awake desperate to breathe. As soon as I was awake, I would be fine.

I always thought this was a form of anxiety attack in my sleep.

the doc i saw brought up an interesting concept - because I am overweight, i may have sleep apnea which is causing this to occur. Which basically means when im falling asleep, im stopping breathing for a period of time, which results in the heart racing and skipping and the feeling like i can't breathe(because im half awake).

So anyone who experiences that jerking awake or anything like this, if you are overweight or even if you are not, you might want to explore this option.

did he recommend you go to a sleep clinic to be tested for sleep apnea? i''m hoping he did. if not if it were me i'd get a referral to check it out.

No, in fact she didn't and its gotten worse

all she told me was to try to lose 30 pounds.

However, after tonight when it went on and on and on and on over and over, i called the hospital because I started being completely unable to breathe when i woke up and having paralysis before I was completely awake.. it scared the bejesus out of me.

See my thread in Health support Anxiety or Sleep apnea i think i called it. It explains everything thats been going on.

I am so exhausted but terrified to try again.

Hi Rainbowzz, I used to experience the same thing. Sometimes now, I still do. I'm not over-weight and this is not to say that sleep apnea is not a possibility. You and your doctor know best. Just found it interesting that I used to jerk awake and feel like I couldn't breath and heart skipping. In fact, the cardiologist put me on meds for awhile. Funny, in a weird sense, how anxiety, no matter how hard we try to deny it within ourselves, ends up surfacing anyway. In my experience.

Hope this didn't sound invalidating. I'm kindda in a weird "protective custody survival" mode and I don't know if I'm making any sense of just going blah blah blah balh. I think I shall stop typing now. And certainly hope that my Rainbowzz is feeling better. Hugs, Song
