It has come to my attention that I probably have ADD as well as serious anxiety issues.
Here's my problem: The meds to treat anxiety calm you. The meds that treat ADD stimulate you. Wouldn't those two meds at the same time cause tremendous contradiction within the body and possibly exacerbate other symptoms?? Anyone with any experience with this in particular?

while I'm no professional, I have heard of non-stimulant ADD medications.

I have the same problem...
I saw a counselor about my issues with anxiety and she believed that a lot of my anxiety was caused by AD/HD and then I was put on Vyvanse. So... it helped with the problems I had during rehearsals, class, and during school work, but made my anxiety in certain situations much worse. I'm going to talk to a psychiatrist about finding a better mix or something. I don't know if you are seeing a professional or whatever, but maybe that's something you should ask them about.

I have many many friends from another forum who take stimulants and anti-anxiety TYPE meds... Like klonopin which is a med for seizures but is often used to help with panic attacks. I take a beta-block with my Adderall which helps lower my heart rate so I which nearly eliminates my panic attack.
I know you said anxiety and not "panic attack" but I thought I would add my 2cents also. Good luck!

You need to talk with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Some people with ADHD have anxiety BECAUSE of the ADHD, others have anxiety as a co-morbid condition but the ADHD makes it worse. In either case, the ADHD meds can (but don't always) lessen anxiety by controlling the ADHD symptoms. It seems we are sometimes anxious about our lack of focus and our impulsive behaviour, (what's up with that, eh? go figure).
Only a personal assessment by a professional will tell you whether or not the stim-meds will help. Good luck. |
