My dad drinks coffee all day long including right before bedtime. Strong coffee. A friend of mine told me today that this is a tell-tale sign of ADHD. Is she right?

Not sure but I do have ADHD and when I worked night shift I could drink coffee right up until I left work and had no problems sleeping. Things changed though when I became perimenopausal.

I've heard that too, but not sure. Sometimes in the morning I can drink coffee and fall back asleep. But then again sometimes I drink too much and get jittery. And I have drank some sweet tea at night recently and fell right asleep, but I have my meds too. So I really don't know! But sure can ramble

Interesting topic... I can be sleepy after taking my Adderall and drinking coffee.
Before I knew I had ADD, I was exhausted All the Time, but also had trouble going to sleep. I'd be passing out at work or could fall asleep as soon as I got home from work. I have kids, so going to sleep after work is not an option. When everything was done at night, I Couldn't Go To Sleep! I call it the "Slide Show". I can't fall asleep because my mind just flashes one thing after another when I used to lay down. After my ADD diagnosis and Adderall treatment my sleep pattern was greatly improved. The thing is, without meds (Stimulants) I can't go to sleep well, with meds I can. I get better rest on 6 hours medicated sleep than I used to with 10 hours non-medicated sleep. I actually take my last dose of Adderall later in the day (4pm) because I sleep Better than taking the last dose at 2pm. |

It's not a tell-tale sign of ADHD. More information is needed.

I've never heard that before. However, for several months out of the year (the coldest darkest ones) I live in a northern climate, and I continually have a vitamin-D deficiency. I checked out a light box from my counselor's office and used it for 10 minutes in the morning for about two weeks. It didn't help in the least. In fact, I regularly needed a 45 minute nap after using it to feel like I was rested enough to start my day. I used it to help combat depression, and a few months later, I was diagnosed with ADHD. All the research I have come across says chemical imbalances in the brain cause atypical responses with several mental illnesses. Perhaps coffee effects people with ADHD differently than people without. It is a psychoactive substance. It might also be that over the years, a person can develop a tolerance to caffeine.

Caffiene does affect people with ADD differently. Stimulant meds actually slow our minds down, making it easier to think. It sounds weird, but the longer I go after my last Adderall, the harder it is for me to go to sleep. As the meds wear off, my brain starts spinning again. Another key to sleep for me is getting in some exercise. On the days that I get my morning and evening walks in, I have a much easier time sleeping.
