So far so good...
My husband dragged his feet about making his first appointment after the initial intake session that we both attended with this new ADD coach. He said that he intended to make the appointment, but a few weeks went by before he actually did it. I would have made the appointment for him had I thought he really was just forgetting, but since procrastination is his major issue, I felt that it was important that he be 100% on board with seeking treatment, and that meant scheduling his own appointment. Anyway, he has been to see her 4 times so far. He's been at least 15-20 minutes late for each session (prompting her to call me to find out if he forgot), but at least he went. They have spent their time partly doing some evaluative work, and part of the time taking care of practical issues. One thing they did was to write a letter to his insurance company, allowing me to make Mental Health appointments and discuss his condition with his doctors. The coach said that it's fairly common to have spouses do this for people with ADD. I found this to be a huge relief (to now be permitted to be involved in his medical stuff) because if he were to ever slip into the same kind of severe depression he had in the past, it will make it much easier for me to get treatment for him. Anyway, he told our T on Friday that he really likes the coach and that he feels like this is going to be helpful for him. It's rare to hear him be enthusiastic about receiving help. She is kind of grandmotherly, about which I didn't know how he'd respond, but he said that she seems to know a lot about ADD and seems to 'get' him. Her emails to me about their progress have been positive but realistic, and she says that she enjoys working with him, and finds him to be bright and intelligent ![]() She did recommend that I give a few "spouses of ADD/ADHD" support groups a try. I'm not sure if I want to do that right now. I spent a lot of time in "spouses of depressed partners" support groups and ended up feeling depressed myself while participating. I get much better and more relevant support here. Anyway, it's a very interesting turn of events in our relationship and in his adulthood, and I'm happy that he's willing to give it a shot. Fingers crossed!
