Methylphenidate helps with concentration but what it also does is take my soul.. and throws it into a black hole! So I always die inside when I look at the pills in the morning. It helps with impulsivity but I don't want it completely gone. Because then I have NO motivation whats so ever.

Dexedrine/Adderall yay or nay?

My daughter takes both. SHe takes long acting methylphenidate in the morning and short acting adderall three times a day and that combo seems to work best for her.

Yay. Your soul doesn't belong in a hole.

Adderall vs dextroamphetamine vs methamphetamine is just Coke vs Pepsi vs Pepsi wirh a Scary Name.

Adderall might work for you. I was put on it because of side effects with methylphenidate, although I no longer take it anymore because of possible interactions with my mood stabilizer. Give it a shot. Otherwise there are alternatives that you could try, such as Straterra and Provigil.

Much of the time I am very depressed which zaps motivation completely, every three or four days I take 1 or 2 37.5 mg which seems to help knock the depression somewhat and boosts my motivation for a couple of hours. During that time I am able to get stuff done and breaths life back in to my creativity.

My adderal xr 20 keeps alot with attention and motivation. Esp helps with my depression. Do you guys think depression and add go hand in hand? It seems to me that they do cause the symptoms of add make me feel useless and I tend to put myself down about it.

Absolutely add causes depression and major mood swings. A large majority of criminals in jail/prison have undiagnosed/untreated add/adhd. I always doubt myself too and I think it's because very early in life I failed in school and gave up because I thought I was stupid. It's breeds self doubt in my opinion.
I take concerta (methylphenidate) twice a day and I now posess impulse control, which feels amazing. I don't think people realize how lucky they are to be born with a healthy mind. It is SO not a given.
I did take straight Ritalin 20 years ago and felt empty and void, I hated it.. I feel your pain. I'm not a candidate for the straight dose pill only time release which has made a huge improvement..

I was curious about the same because my daughter just hardly ever seems happy and children should be happy. He therapist mentioned she may also need a ssri. Of course I don't want her to have to take yet another medication but I don't want her to be unhappy.

I just happened to be logged on and got yr msg...how old is yr daughter? My daughter is 16 and at 14 was depressed with adhd. So she was put on adderall and mirtazapine which is an anti depressant. She is doing fabulous now.

Funny - I was having the same debate with myself. My husband is on Adderall but seems very unhappy. His anxiety is ramping up as well. I've read there is a correlation between some ADD meds and anxiety but can't convince him to talk to his Doc about it. What IS the answer??? Methylphenidate or Amphetamines?

I take concerta in the morning and ritalin at the end of the day. What ever dosage, It has the same affect on me (The original poster) until it wears off. That's what it's supposed to do I guess which is to calm the mind down and stop distractions, help focus etc. But maybe if I took amphetamine, I wouldn't have the sadness unmotivated effect. But I'm not going to mention it to my psychiatrist because he says that they're all the same meds just under a different brand which is ridiculous but there's nothing I can do at this point. The methylphenidate works great other than this side effect so it's not worth asking for something that has such a terrible reputation.

Also, who ever said that an antidepressant could help with the flat effect related to stimulants, I don't think that would work tbh but you can try.

I guess the answer must lie somewhere in between, physiologically. What works well for some may not have the same effect on others. My husband KNOWS that his Adderall isn't working as well as it used to but is afraid to say anything for fear the alternative is worse (take something that helps a touch versus something that may prove to help even less). I think the answer is to keep trying until you find the right combination. I hope.... The alternative is unthinkable to me!

Hmm. I've never even heard of a flat effect, I guess that's what I had then. That sucks your feeling that way. Maybe the dosage is to high? Are you taking any antidepressants with the concerta? My pdoc also told me I am not a candidate for the regular release tabs because of that side effect. Are you taking time release?

Ya the Concerta is time released (Last about 8-10hours). 54mg seems to be the best dosage. It would have less of an affect on my mood if I went back to 36mg but it doesn't work as good at that dose. I discussed that with my psychiatrist and we decided that I should stay at 54mg.

I'm taking Prozac with my Concerta at 80mg because of severe anxiety. It doesn't help with the low mood that ritalin and concerta give off when they are in effect.

I'm jealous of the people that get an increase in mood with stimulants but I guess my brain is just different. Benzodiazepines make me hyper and lift my mood but I have terrible memory on them quite weird.

Almost everyone gets an effect from drinking energy drinks like monster or 5 hour energy. I don't notice anything from drinking two energy drinks or 20 cups of coffee. When I don't take methylphenidate in the day, I have an insane craving for sugar. I would go to the shop and buy 20-40 dollars worth of candy, coca cola, etc. When I was a kid, I would spend at least 10 dollars a day on sweets and I'm skinny I just burn it off. If I don't take it, I know that Ill need some type of stimulation. Music sounds terrible on methylphenidate, food tastes terrible but It's like I have a content in me like the stimulation is balanced out and I don't need anything. I used to be addicted to video games playing like 12 hours a day straight. When I take methylphenidate, I just don't want to. But at least it helps with my symptoms.

It shouldn't be much of a problem because my mood is already flat
