I have adult ADHD and have been taking Adderall XR for many years until recently. I was taken off of the stimulant because I was bipolar manic. My outpatient psychiatrist is planning on putting me back on the medication but only after several weeks of no symptoms of mania. I was thinking about asking my IOP psychiatrist about prescribing for me either Strattera, Vyvanse, or Concerta because my inattentiveness and restlessness has been horrible. I really struggle to listen and pay attention in my current IOP program and so I'm not getting much out of these sessions. Also, I'm supposed to be starting school in a few weeks and I need to be able to focus in class.
What has been your experience with either Strattera, Vyvanse or Concerta? Has anyone experienced symptoms of mania while on any of these medications? Also, for anyone who has taken both Adderall and any of these 3 medications, are they just as effective as Adderall? Thanks.

Yes I'm on lamictal and two different anti-psychotics. The problem is my IOP doctor (not my outpatient doctor) is super anti-stimulants so I'm worried he will only be willing to prescribe strattera. I'm going to have to come up with a convincing argument. But what I really want is my adderall back. It helps me tremendously. But even caffeine worsens my mania...so I know it's not a good idea right now. So maybe vyvanse and concerta are bad ideas, too. I dunno. I just want my ADHD symptoms to go away!

Well it's just the IOP pdoc that is anti-stimulants and I only see him while I'm in this IOP program and whenever I'm inpatient. Otherwise I see my regular pdoc who is all for giving me adderall she just doesn't want to give it to me right now since I've been rapid cycling and in and out of psychosis. Concentrating in the IOP is whatever, but I'm really worried about not being able to concentrate while I'm in school...which starts at the end of the month. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I'll discuss my options with the outpatient pdoc on Tuesday.
