Hi all,
I am a 45 year-old new father who has been diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive type) about a year ago. I have been taking 64mg Concerta in the am and a 15 mg Ritalin when it wears off in the evening. The meds have been tremendously helpful in the following ways - More energy - Higher self-confidence - When working on the right task and interested, more likely to relentlessly pursue it until completion However I have found the following to be challenges that I am facing that remain unresolved: -Marriage suffered. Wife who has anxiety feels I have changed in a negative way, probably due to higher self confidence. -Often hyperfocus on irrelevant tasks -When perceived to be under attack, anger and aggression increased. Not uncontrollable or violent but more likely to refuse to back down, especially when I know that I am right about something. -Still losing and forgetting things and disorganized. Was wondering if anyone had any feedback or suggestions that could help with this type of stuff. I have thought of trying different meds or possibly seeing someone who specializes in the field. Am skeptical as to whether a coach or CBT would be for me. Thanks in advance for any insight and help you might be able to provide! |

Hi Illyrio, and welcome aboard. You will find lots here pursue it! I am relatively new as well. I had posted something along the lines of your relationship issues earlier, but I cannot address the medication issues as I come from the Non ADD side of the relationship. I will say this, again no expert, the medications can sometimes cause ill effects with emotional controls. If you value your relationship I would look into it seriously. Research ADHD and DESR or have your medical care team look at it for you.
I have experienced the seemingly "higher self confidence" from the other side, combined with the anger/emotional upset....it cost us a beautiful relationship. This link is from Psych Central https://psychcentral.com/blog/archiv...rried-to-adhd/ Best to you |

The Medication is meant too help main symptoms, like depression, finishing task, increase self esteem. I have found alot of people don't do good on concerta, or Ritalin.I took both at one point so . Studies show Vyvanse is more effective in adults with ADHD and I was on it and really helped me alot, but after a year and half it stopped lasting long enough it use to last 12-14 hours one dose in A.m. my doctor switched me too Adderall 20 mg 3 times a day this way I have more say in how long it last cause I can take right before I got to do some work or say going out with woman , basically I take when I think I should be at best too learn and retain information. Anyway I'm 40 but I was diagnosed at 6. Seriously check Vyvanse.com it's got all info including the test they did too get it approved it's impressive .

Vyvanse may work for you, and that's terrific, but in general it is certainly not as effective as Adderall or Ritalin for most adults. I am always skeptical when I see people start with "Studies show..." Best to stick to your own experience.
