Hi all, first time poster here. This is a very specific question that it's possible no one on here will be able to answer, but I'm gonna give it a shot. I have ADHD and finally got it together to get prescribed medication a few years ago. I live and work in San Francisco in the trades in a job that requires attention me to pay attention to detail and multitask while balancing on steel beams sometimes 110 feet up in the air, and if you mess up people can get really hurt. I take Vyvanse and it has significantly helped me at work, and helped me feel confident and capable. I recently lost my insurance which, after getting prior authorization from my doctor, had been covering my prescription minus a small co-pay. I've recently signed up for Medi-Cal and was presented with two options: Anthem Blue Cross Bay area, or the San Francisco Health Plan, which is available to residents of San Francisco. I know that neither of these plans covers Vyvanse (Or any other ADHD stimulant medication for adults) without a prior authorization from a doctor (Which I will get) but even past that it's unclear if they'll pay for it. It seems very dependent on the individual case. I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with these plans and has any insight as to which one might be more likely to approve the prior authorization? Thanks everyone regardless!

Hello Tram: I'm sorry I do not know the answer to your question. Perhaps some other members who do will yet see your post & reply. However I noticed this is your first post, here on PC, & no one has yet greeted you. So I thought I would. So... welcome to PsychCentral! I hope you find whatever amount of time you spend here to be beneficial.

I don't know if you're here simply seeking information with regard to this particular concern, or if you plan to hang in here with us. However, should you be planning to stick with us (we hope you do), may I suggest you introduce yourself to the general membership over on our New Members Introduction forum? Here's a link:

Hi Tram, I am not a regular poster here but I will give my opinion on this, as no one else has so far. I think your situation 110 feet in the air on a steel beam should certainly qualify you as an exceptional case, but I am not qualified to make that determination. Since it sounds like you have no other options, you should see if you qualify for the stimulant meds through Medi-cal. Even if they say no you should be able to appeal. I tried a stimulant ADHD medication (Methylin ER) once as an adult, it wasn't for me but at least that one is cheap as it's available in generic. So if they don't approve the Vyvanse at least it's something to try that doesn't break the bank. Best of luck to you.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
