I've told my mom about me possibly having Aspergers, she said she would look for a pyschologist, but then she says they all require you to have a note from a doctor. So I told her that's why we would go to the doctor first.

Now, however, it doesn't seem like she'll do anything, and I really don't know how to go about doing anything myself.

I"m going off to college in 2 weeks and I really want to find out if I do have Aspergers (all the tests I take, all the information I read, and my bf who has it says it's highly likely) but I don't think I'll be able to do that before going off to college, which makes me a bit nervous because I don't know how well I'd handle college, and an aspergers diagnosis could make things easier.

Are there anymore options of going about figuring this out, finding what I want to know??

Best to you all,

Anive

You can start by going to your doctor. You can also start directly by contacting a psychologist for an assessment. You don't want to wait too long. It is hard to find therapists who believe in treating asperger's or autism-related problems directly if you didn't have the diagnosis as a child (at least before age 18) and legally, those disorders have to be diagnosed before age 18 to be entitled to government benefits for them as a disability or accommodations. Any therapist can help you with coping with the challenges in your life, whether those are related to asperger's or something else.

You might also try vocational rehabilitation. They can refer you for the appropriate assessment and help you with college and planning for your career. It's a good way to get answers and actual help, and won't cost you unless you are independently wealthy or something.

See if this Asperger Foundation publication helps?

Personally I think getting a diagnosis within two weeks is going to be cutting it very close, and it's probably not doable, especially for something complex like ASD where a diagnostician has to take in a lot of different factors to account for your behaviour and actions.

Plus you might have to wait for appointment slots anyways, so it might take a lot longer than two weeks to have your answer.

You can speed the process up by presenting your GP with a list of symptoms you think are caused by ASD and having your mum present a list of symptoms that you showed during a child, and also show your GP the diagnostic criteria of Asperger's and tell him/her how you think you met them as a child and how they still clinically impact on your life now.

Yes, I agree; two weeks is difficult. But you could definitely go to your doctor, get an evaluation just to determine "Is there something to worry about?", and get a referral to a doctor near where you'll be going to college. That way, you should be able to get an evaluation before too much time passes, and hopefully access services at school (I presume this is why you are pursuing diagnosis?)

If you have some other diagnosis, though, you may be able to get the same help you'd get for Asperger's anyway. Like, for example, people with ADHD can often get extended testing time; and if you need it because of Asperger's but also have ADHD, you can often squeeze it in that way. A diagnosis isn't a stand-alone thing; it's a tool to help you get assistance/treatment. And if some other diagnosis will do the trick for now, you mayn't need an evaluation as quickly as you say.

Thanks for all the replies, I've already come up with a plan, so don't need anymore help. And for those who think I thought I'd get one in 2 weeks, no, I didn't think that, I know i won't.
