Hi all, AS I contnue to learn about asperger's, I had a situation last month that I found humor in due to having asperger's. I was visiting with a friend in anohter state and we were watching a fishing program (in his younger days he was into fishing and hunting). The guy in the show caught a salmon. My frined said to me that the best way to eat a salmon is right out of the water. I instantly pictured someone catching one and eating it like that – raw and alive, but I didn't say anything. Then he said that when he was in Canada once on a fishing trip, they caught salmon and cooked it as soon as they caught it and it was delicious. It was like “ah – that’s what he meant by right out of the water.” Anyone have any similar instances where they took things so literally at first? Thanks, Frito |

Hey Frito - I pictured your friend like a bear! Howie Mandel, the comedian, used to have a Saturday morning cartoon, Bobby's World, made up of exactly these kinds of things. I wonder if Howie is Aspie? The show was to appeal to children who didn't yet understand euphemisms and so took everything literally.

There is a whole book of them! I can't remember the title. I can't think of any right now but I have those glitches all the time!!!

I'm not officially diagnosed with Asperger's, but I have had my suspicions. My son does autism though. Anyway, I remember taking conversations literally in High School. A teacher was planning a bake sale. She had told the class to keep it simple and to just go buy a box of cake mix from the store. I literally took a box of cake mix to the bake sale and didn't understand why they laughed. I eventually figured it out and felt rather stupid. I laugh about it now, but I often wonder how many other events there where that I may not have caught. Interestingly, I now teach ELA and especially enjoy teaching figurative language. Go figure

This is quite a common trait of aspergers. I have been diognosed with aspergers since a young age and I take things literally sometimes. I find it irritating sometimes (like in social situations which i'm not really that good at anyway) Then I often get angry with myself and I just know that the anger will be followed by depression (overstimulation of one emotion followed by a crash) I am currently working on better ways of coping with this so I can carry on as normal instead of shutting the world out when I get depressed which is what I normally do.

Can you recommend any good books on aspergers? If so this would be great because i'd like to learn as much as I can about aspergers. Thanks :-)

I'm having an ongoing misunderstanding with my wife because she talks about our daughter's birthday, when she really means the date of her birthday party. Why can't people say what they mean?!
