I've developed a thing for string lately. I like to carry around the spool while my family is tying up plants, for example. Yesterday while digging, I found an old piece that had turned gray, and I wore it like a bracelet for a while. When we were done tying things, I sadly noted that I would have to put the spool away now. Literally two seconds later I was like, "Oh look, a piece of rope!" I'd found a short length of clothesline. So I put the spool away and carried that around for awhile instead.
Eventually I tossed both the rope and the string bracelet in the trash, but I'm already thinking how to get a piece I can carry around some more.
Anyone else do stuff like this?

Are you asking about obsessions?

I've not done exactly that but something similar.
I have a tendency to fixate on jewelry.
I'll go through phases where I'll buy/collect as many as I can find of a particular style, wear them everyday for months at a time, and then forget about them.

I do this mostly with bracelets.
As long as I watch my spending I'm ok with it. It's not harming myself or anyone else to indulge.

I've been collecting really nice symmetrical pinecones lately. I was upset to see that all but 2 of them blew off my deck while we had a storm today. I don't really consider it an obsession, but my husband thinks it's weird. I have a cute little one in my purse.

I collect clock gear wheels. Sometimes, I like to spin them in the palm of my hand or on my arm.

Cool! Where do you find them? Do you take apart watches?

I've also taken to rocks. I've got a half dozen polished ones that I found lying around, as well as a few others.
My collection of random objects includes an old piece of lightbulb and part of a bone.

I buy old wind-up clocks at thrift stores and take them apart.
Thanks for this!

I worked in a class of severely autistic middle school students and had one that was obsessed with string (thick string...almost rope) to the point that you couldn't wear necklaces and ties around him because he'd rip them off and he'd sometimes tear off his own shirt and turn it in to string and play with it. Not trying to compare, I know you're nothing like that, but you asked....

I found a pincone today that was completely closed on top and wide open on the bottom. Obviously wasn't meant to come off the tree yet, but the storm yesterday blew it down. I think I actually squealed in delight.

I like to collect stones of places of where I've been and just nice looking stones to begin with. I'll carry one around in my pocket and call it my gratitude rock, but really it is my comforter stone.

Kinda reminds me of something i did when i was younger around 8-9 when I got hold of a massive amount of string and recreated a spider's web that was about 3x3 meters across and was made of fine yarn which looked quite nice in the end =P
