I was diagnosed with AS five years ago. Around two years ago I started experiencing some mild psychotic/dissociative symptoms (I very frequently have disturbingly graphic violent intrusive thoughts which border on visual AND auditory hallucinations, and I have different people in my head who talk to me - I have a separate post about this in the DID section of the forum), and I also experienced what I believe was a depressive episode. After an emergency appointment and evaluation by CAMHS, I was told that it was all to do with Asperger's Syndrome. Has anyone else experienced similar problems as a result of AS, or have CAMHS screwed me over and lied to me? :/

I don't have much help to offer. I'm not dissociative, I'm always here. It's what I am that changes for me.
With Asperger's one can be sort of overly sensitive, not only to impressions and the world, but toward the inner world as well. However, JUST Asperger's does not explain what you are describing. It might be that your sensitivity opened some doors to something else. IMO it would need to be looked into separately, if you have a good doctor you could try to run it by them.

Hi kurlz_98, jimi's advice sounds good, I have a family member w aspergers and we also have psychosis in fam, and I had a few students who had both. Fortunately, they both received some helpful medical treatment. I wish you the best there and wish I could be more helpful! Good luck!!

I've experienced what you just described because I have ASD and bipolar 1 w/ psychotic features. I had ASD all my life so when I was experiencing mood disturbances and psychosis at age 15, it was a red flag that something else was causing it. Talk to your therapist about this and hopefully you will get the help you need.

Thank you! :3
Even though the psychosis-like symptoms are fairly recent, my therapist still said that every single one of my symptoms and mood disturbances were to do with my Asperger's Syndrome (she even laughed at me and essentially told me to stop being silly when I told her I had other people in my head). I'm going to start seeing a therapist provided by a service other than CAMHS, whether they'll take me seriously or not I don't know. |

I've been there, I also had a therapist laugh at me for actually the very same thing a few years ago. I left his service and never went back. It actually took me being hospitalised a few years later (because things had gotten so bad) for me to get a new PDoc and by God she's a million times better.
She sent me for all sorts of referrals (which wasn't a fun process but it was worth it) and I eventually got diagnosed with Aspergers, OCD, and a Dissociative Disorder. From what I've come to understand, having Aspergers actually puts us at a much higher risk of mental health problems such as these and any therapist worth their salary should take any reports like this very seriously indeed. The graphic violent thoughts sounds very like what I get from my OCD, I have a few 'branches' of OCD but the primary problem I have with it is intrusive thoughts. I also have body symmetry OCD but that's a whole tapping nightmare of difference. I'd highly recommend searching for a new PDoc, preferably one who has experience with Aspergers. |

I think that's a really good point, and I'm glad it worked out for you. To my understanding, just a few years back even, many therapists and PDocs weren't too familiar with Aspergers and all it could entail!
