When I am doing something like reading, a project, or artwork, I can do it for hours or days and totally ignore the world around me.

I am in a fog and it is hard to snap out of it until I feel I am done with whatever I was doing. I get this glazed over look in my eyes.

My husband and kids laugh and say 'mom is in the zone'.

I dont mind but it does cause problems sometimes with missed appointments or being late for one.

Its not OCD, its just loving what im doing and getting 'stuck in the zone'.

Never been diagnosed with anything and dont see a therapist so, I dont know.

I come from a long line of artists and musicians and wonder if its just a character thing?

It is yes. I get lost in what I'm doing, lose all track of time and my surroundings. I've forgotten to eat for entire days, not slept, had people talking to me and I've not even been aware they were in the room.

It can happen for anything, most often though it's things I derive great enjoyment from. For example, I've been working on a coding project this last few weeks, and in that time I've pulled a few all nighters because I just didn't realise how much time had passed and nobody pulled me out of it. It does leave me feeling awful though if I go that long because I'm physically drained and usually starving.
Thanks for this!

Wow.
Just like me. I forget to eat and loose all contact with my surroundings too.
I will forget conversations I had while 'in the zone' as I call it.

Except for the negative effects, I am enjoying myself while creating my artwork or whatever it is I am absorbed in.

Thank you. I thought I was the only one.

I used to work in a bank but could not snap out of what I was doing at the time to serve customers. I would get so absorbed in just one task and have tunnel vision.

Holding a normal job was just too hard because multi tasking is nearly impossible for me.
I can only focus on one thing at a time....

My son does. I also do it but I am not an aspie. During an exam one time my professor had to knock on the table beside me to get my attention.

I can get really intensely focused on things like: Reading. Watching DVDS/TV. Being on my laptop. Even my thoughts or writing poetry.

When I'm this focused, I mostly can hear what people are saying, but its not really registering in my brain. I lose track of how long I've been doing something for, often and although most times I can respond when someone asks me something, sometimes, I just can't seem to hear them. My family calls this, selective hearing but it really isn't.

Yeah i can have hyperfocus quite strongly

Unfortunately this focus also tends to get me to have negative patterns of thoughts i get locked into.
Thanks for this!
