Hello. I hope you don't mind me posting here. My son was diagnosed with level 1 autism (from my understanding he would have been diagnosed with Aspergers if he had been diagnosed younger) a couple of years ago. My son is almost 12 and has started puberty and it has been rough for him. In September he will also be starting Jr High. A lot of changes for him, well he has some excitement about Jr High I can also see that he is afraid. Any ideas on how to help the transition? What do you wish would have been different for you at this age? Any help, suggestions, etc greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I would just tell him its really not any different, other than separate classrooms for each subject. Just keep reassuring him there is nothing to be afraid of, and that Jr high has more to offer than elementary school as far as extra curricular activities. It will also be a chance to meet new people and make new friends. Try to play down any of the anxieties he might have, and keep a positive spin on it. He will get use to the environment in short time, and wont think anything of it eventually.

Good luck
