It was the first mood stabiliser to work for me, and I can't see me coming off it, unless ordered to by the doctor. They didn't put me on lithium since my mother had such a bad reaction to it. I was on tegretol, carbomazapine and mirtazipine before they tried this and it worked.

At first I went a little hyper, then I levelled out. I've not had the huge black moods since, though I'm still a little prone to depression. I haven't been manic since I've been on it. Rather than making me feel drugged up, it helps me feel "normal." I really like it, it's worked very well for me. Hope it works well for you too.

WOW! THANK YOU FOR SHARING UR STORY WITH ME. I WAS SCARED IN THE BEGINNING BECAUSE MY DOCTOR STARTED DECREASING LITHIUM(FROM 2 TO 1) IN MY "DIET" AND INCREASING THE NEW ONE(I STARTED WITH 50MG), BUT I STARTED TO FEEL REALLY HYPER. I CALLED MY DOCTOR TWICE WITHIN 2 MONTHS TAKING IT. I FELT MY BRAIN VERY CLEAR, VERY ALERT, BUT REALLY HYPER, WITH TOO MUCH ENERGIES. THEN, MY DOCTOR PUT ME IN 100 MG AND 1 LITHIUM 300MG UNTIL NEXT TIME I GET TO SEE HER. I AM PRAYING THIS MEDICATION WILL MAKE IT. MOST OF THE TIMES I GET MANIC, I HAVE NOT MUCH DEPRESSION PROBLEMS. I ONLY GET DEPRESS WHEN THEY TRY TO TAKE ME OUT FROM THE MANIC STAGE. THANK U AGAIN FOR UR RESPOND, U RENEWED MY HOPE AND FAITH ON MY NEW "PARTNER"......GOD BLESS U AND BE SAFE!!!!!

I thought Lamotrigine is an anti-depresssant that can cause mania in bipolars? I am currently taking 400 mg Seroquel, .5 mg of klonopin, the occasional Ambien, and 75 mg Lamotrigine, 50 mg in the morning and 25 mg during late afternoon. I wouldn't be able to take it without a higher dose of Seroquel. I increased it from 300 mg to 400 mg.

Lamotrigine has stabilized my mood despite having the usual everyday stressors and it has helped me get over postpartum depression. Good luck with it.

Lamotrigine isn't an antidepressant, it is an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy, they classify it as a mood stabilizer in reference to bipolar or mood disorder treatment. All these meds can get a little confusing.

I'm glad you guys are finding success with this med.

Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant and mood stabiliser, however it does have anti-depressant properties. It is regarded as being the most antidepressant of the mood stabilisers and as with all antidepressants it can cause mania in some people, though less so than other antidepressants (because it is also a mood stabiliser) which is why it is used so often in people with bipolar.

Regardless of the name that you give it, it is a great drug and really helped me when I was on it

I've taken Lamictal, lithium, bupropion and Seroquel for a number of years now, I find it to be pretty effective and easy to deal with. I screwed up my meds a week or two ago and went without for a few days. That was NOT a happy thing.

Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if that lack is causing some serious anger issues I'm having, even though it's been more than a week since I got right. Hmmm..

Lamotrigine took a little while to work for me. I had to get up to 75mg before I started noticing any change. Once it got up to something approaching a therapeutic level, though, I noticed a huge difference. It pulled me out of the awful 15-month long depression I'd been in, and due to the 3mg of Risperdal I now take with it I don't really have to worry about mania.

I'm currently stable, barring the odd bit of anxiety here and there. So yeah, I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I hope it works for you!

hamed_online and Coton, maybe you could post your posts as new threads in the main forum, cos more people will see them.
I only have mild manias, but Abilify works for me with minimal side effects.
Good luck to you both and welcome to PC

I'm on 900 mg. of Lithium, 100 mg. of Lamactial,2 mg. Klonipin, and I went through real bad sucidial episode when I quit Haldol so I'm on 40 mg. Celexa. Now the Lithium messup my thyoid, and I have to taKe synethic thyoid hormone, but I'm sane. And I'm glad I'm on what I should be on after all these years. I'm sure your pdoc will take blood tests. It's like 15 to 20 % that has their thyoid mess up. So I didn't mean to scare you. I'm glad you're doing well.

Hello, I have been on Lamotrigine, trileptal, and pristiq for a few yrs now but lamotrigine longer than that maybe 5yrs. I have had zero side effects with it and no necessary blood tests , it has been the number one pill for me. Trileptal is good too but can cause double vision for me and pristiq is the best antidepressant I have been on. Everyone is affected different of course. Good luck

Hi There,
My daughter deals with BPII and has been taking lamotrigene for about two years. She also takes a sleeping aid. She was taking lithium many years ago but is doing fine with lamotrigene.

Good Luck
