My experience with zyprexa is not a good one. I was on it for several years despite my side effects. Most noticable one was weight gain. I gained maybe 40 pounds on it. (Some credit must be given to Depakote for weight gain also.) Lithium gave me hypothyroid which added to metabolic syndrome. But the worst thing zyprexa did to me was weight gain which contributed to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. My metabolism has come to a crawl from zyprexa's effects also which only adds to the fatty liver. Unfortunately, fatty liver leads to cirrhosis of the liver which is a hardening of the liver. Fortunately, your liver can repair itself, but cirrhosis CAN kill you.

I am a weirdo with this (ok and most meds). It does nothing for me. It didn't even make me the slightest bit sleepy. It was like drinking water. I only took it maybe a week because I was on a lot of Seroquel and didn't need to double up; the hope was it would break a mania but it didn't and so I went off it and went IP instead.

It worked great for me as an emergency medication in the hospital, but I immediately developed bad akathisia and gained weight quickly. The hospital doctor said I should keep it in mind as a temporary emergency medication.

I was always tired. It worked but I was sleeping all the time. I gained weight on it that I can't seem to loose.

Zyprexa along with Cymbalta pulled me out of a deep, debilitating depression about 8 years ago. It was a lifesaver...but eventually I was switched to different meds b/c of weight gain. I found it to work quickly and rescue me when I was in a very dark place.

Gained 14 lbs in a month ! Nope !

It made me literally look at my sofa and wonder if it would be tasty to eat.

I refuse to become diabetic, high blood pressure , back pain, all wrecked joints and heart disease etc to “ maybe” keep my Bipolar stable.

By far the worse psych Med I ever was on.

Never again

Oh yes- and I am pre-diabetic now too.

I agree with Christina- by far THE WORST medication I have ever been on- hands down!- and i had a lot of medical problems from birth, including NEC- Necrotizing enderocolitis.

my treatment providers back in the day were obsessed with making me take it, either alone or in symbyax (the prozac+zyprexa combo pill). I was...not interested. I tried it once, at a low dose...it was ok, till I got akathisia. ha! never again!

I'm on Abilify now. Not perfect, but...I think its easier to tolerate and doesn't destroy the body to the same extent as zyprexa.

Helpful mood wise! But gave me diabetes. Already had significant weight gain from Seroquel, but no sign of pre diabetes by the time I started zyprexa. By the time I stopped taking it, I had diabetes. Some weight gain, but not as bad as Seroquel, and not enough to justify diabetes. Since stopping zyprexa, A1C has returned to normal levels, after a couple of years and moderate diet changes.

Was on it for years. Ate like an Olympic Champion. Would not stop eating. Initially, it made me sleepy, but that wore off, as it always does in me. No other real side effects. It did seem to help keep me from being manic, but we finally stopped it and moved on to Abilify. Zyprexa is now supposed to be my emergency sleep medicine and I had to take it a couple weeks ago. Absolutely worthless. Need to find a new emergency med. I've stopped all these sedating things and now my sleep is somewhat precarious. Fingers crossed.
