Has anyone found a nutrition plan that works to keep the weight off us medicated paople? I have put on 6.5lbs in three weeks. At this rate I will put on 104 pounds in a year. Not cool with me.

Any thoughts? I thought about going to a nutritionist where I can weigh in each week, ore weight watchers, but my experience with weight watchers is that they help you figure out how to eat little treats all day long. I want to cut sugar and sodium (but not all my sodium because I am on Trileptal and don't want to get hyponatremia)

Thanks, everyone!

I tried Atkins, some people say it is not good for you but I lost 25lbs in 2 months. I then went off, and watched what I ate, no sugar, low carbs and managed to keep it off for a while now, I am thinking about going back on it again, I want to lose another 25. Good luck to you.

gained weight 10 pounds over yet it may seem like much....It's enough to feel I'm ugly.....I was brought up be told I was ugly so sure that's why it's such a BIG deal for me.

I had a gastric bypass three and a half years ago for the sole reason to improve some serious health problems I had. I was on Depakote at the time (by the way, liquid Depakote is yukky!) and lost as much as I possibly could. Anyway, I managed to lose about 70% of my goal weight and had to settle for that because of the meds. Then over the past two years, I had seven traumatic events occur (deaths, accidents, illnesses and other losses) which landed me into the hospital but along the way I gained 18 lbs. After I got out, my pdoc absolutely does not understand why I'm freaking out about the weight gain. I already noticed a slight rise in my blood pressure. I WILL NOT gain that weight back! But he is reluctant to prescribe the Topamax that my hospital doctor recommended as an add-on. I am about to scream. I cannot take Lamictal or Tegretol and won't take Lithium. But I can get away with only 1000mg of Depakote if he will crank up the Topamax to 100mg. So I am sharing your frustration. He mentioned some other options so I hope he comes to understand how important this is to me. Incidentally, one rule of thumb for post-bypass patients that seems to be similar to Adkins is eat your proteins first, then complex carbs. One thing that is never smart to eat is saturated fat at all. Unless you simply treat yourself to a piece of bacon once a month or so. But some proteins, particularly beans of various types, are wonderful foods. Also, eggs are great. They are not as dangerous as their reputation as long as you don't overdo it. One major myth about dieting is that salads are really not as healthy as their reputation says. It is better to make a salad out of brown rice mixed with various chopped vegetables or bulgar wheat with vegetables. Fiber is always important. Raw veggies are ok but all that lettuce is deceiving and you are hungry soon afterward. I'm sure this is more than you wanted to know but maybe some of it helps.
Thanks for this!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I wish I could take Topamax, but it landed me in the hospital. I guess just old fashioned diet and exercise. I have been feeling better the past few days and I am going to see p-doc tomorrow so weight gain is on my list of questions.

I gained one hundred pounds during two years on Trileptal. After the drug was DCd I lost fifty pounds in six months on the Adkins diet. I also like the South Beach diet. Both are good for avoiding simple carbs.

My weight ballooned up over the last year to the point that I had gained a total of almost 40 pounds by January. I decided it was time to stop the weight gain and to be honest all I did was ficus on calories. Weight gain is essentially more calories in than calories used. I cut myself back to about 1500-1600 calories per day. I cut out fast food totally and completely laid off carbonated beverages, drinking mainly water instead. My exercise come by way of playing sports on the weekend so it's not like I'm even really active. I do have a job where I'm moving around but it's not excessive. Since January I have lost 25 pounds and am at my target weight at this point so I'm back up to eating 1800 calories to maintain my weight. It may not be the most recommended way to diet, but it allows freedom in that if I had a snack then I could cut out calories somewhere else. I didn't have to completely give up everything I like to eat. I'm sorry you're having a weight gain problem from your meds... good luck!
