I had a hysterectomy at 26 years old. I would say about 5 months after the hysterectomy I had my first all out manic episode. I am a married woman, I have always had a good relationship with my husband; until just out of the blue I decided I needed another man to make me feel good. And he did. My husband finds out, we work it out and move on. Well, a year give and take a month or so around the time I had my first episode, I do the exact same thing again. Except this time things went a lot further, my episode was spiraling out of control. My husband still right there seeing everything going on, finally got me some help.

All of the time these things were happening, no one knew I had bipolar II disorder. We never knew much about it until I was hospitalized this last time.

What I am curious about is, does any one think that having that hysterectomy brought it on?? I am still trying to figure out my triggers. I just started putting the two events together and was just wondering if anyone had a similar incidence after a hysterectomy.

Thank you all for reading this forever long thread

I've never heard of bipolar mania being affected by hormones but then, I'm not a doctor, either. It's just that I've never heard of it. However, since you are in your late twenties, that's around when bipolar illness shows up in a lot of people. So that part doesn't surprise me.

If the surgery was traumatic for you it could be a potential trigger. There are a few elements from what I've read that cause bipolar disorder. 1 is genetics. 2 is it has to be triggered. Triggering often occurs by exposure to a toxic agent in childhood or else a traumatic event, especially abuse in childhood.

Just a thought. I don't know.

Well, I guess it was just a kawinky dink then, that the two events happened so close together. Thanks for the thoughts though!

My T-doc mentioned that hormonal changes can bring on an episode. I am sometimes very much ruled by my hormones. I know that my first real depression came on at age 19 and the more I think about it, the more I recognize manic behavior as a high school student. I know for sure that having my first son threw me into a hypomanic state, and having my second threw me into a depression with varying degrees of severity and mixed states which lasted two years. I just came out of that episode a couple of weeks ago.

I do believe that hormones play a big role in my mood states.
