I want to get off of seroquel. I take 1050mg. It is making me fat. I am not taking it as a sleep aide. It’s an antipsychotic and I am not psychotic so why do I need to be on it?????
I have an appointment with my pdoc tomorrow. Does anyone have advice on what I should say?

You could just be up front and ask him why you're on the medication. There are other indications for Seroquel other than psychosis and sleep. I was on it initially for being in a depressed phase but I was having too much sedation from it so I had to come off it. Now I take a really, really small dose for sleep. Maybe you were psychotic at some point - or not even fully psychotic but maybe you had psychotic features - in which case being on the med would make sense. Sometimes in that case you need a large dose of Serouqel at first but then for maintenance you can drop back on the dose to a more reasonable level. Otherwise if you're not willing to take it, then just tell the pdoc that you can't tolerate it any more and would like to try something different. Be honest and tell him it's a really high dose and you're having weight gain and it's not worth it to you since you're not even sure why your're taking it in the first place. Good luck talking to the pdoc!

I agree with G. You need to tell her that you are not putting up with the side effects any longer and you need a new anti-p that's weight neutral and doesn't make you want to sleep your life away. Seroquel is not treating your bipolar depression at all, therefore it should be dumped. End of story.

I would want to ask why you are even on the medication. Sometimes it is prescribed to help depression. 1050 mg. is about five times as much as I have ever heard as being therapeutic. If this is what you are taking, I would start questioning the doctor as to this dosage level. Seroquel does put on weight and it also ups the cholesterol level. Be assertive and tell him that you want off the med. There are plenty of others to take that don't put the weight on. Good Luck. Sending good thoughts your way. phoenix47

Ask why you are on the Seroquel, and what it is supposed to be doing for you. There are antipsychotics that are weight neutral, so if you really do need one there are other choices!

Good luck.

Just be upfront and tell them you can't handle the weight gain anymore and would like to try something else. Antipsychotics are also used to treat bipolar.
