It's been a long time since I have been on here. I have been thru 3 meds and just trying to get the 4th one right. I still have the hypersexuality no matter what I try. It gets really bad everymonth when I ovulate! I can't find any books or anything on the internet to help me describe this to my husband. Does anyone know of any books or any literature about hypersexuality as a symptom of BP Mania? It makes me feel sooooo lonely, i just need someone right now, but then I will get myself into another huge mess and ruin my life for good. I can't handle this!!

I don't know of any books, but I recently did some research on this. Infedelity and hypersexuality is a symptom of bipolar. Just do a search on the internet for bipolar hypersexulatity or bipolar infedelity. I'm sure you'll find some info. Good luck.

Hypersexuality is a symptom of bipolar. Also, when a woman ovulates her libido naturally rises as nature's way of keeping the species going. Are you sure you are experiencing hypersexuality, or could it be a higher libido for the few days surrounding ovulation?

Possibly you are experiencing both.

I have had bipolar symptoms as long as I can remember and with the exception of after separating from my first husband, I can't remember ever feeling hypersexual. I never acted on the impulses, but I think they came from a feeling of "I'm freeeeee!" I wouldn't have known it as a symptom anyway, because I was undiagnosed.

There is a small section called "Hypersexuality" in the "Bipolar Disorder For Dummies" book by Candida Fink, MD and Joe Kraynik. It says in the first two sentences: Hypersexuality - supercharged state of sexual confidence and desire - is a diagnostic feature of mania that often results in risky sexual behavior. It stirs up boatloads of trouble for the person with bipolar disorder and her family.

Hope this book helps.

I get a markedly increased sex drive when I ovulate.

The hypersexuality I experienced when manic last year is nothing like that, it was like someone else was in control of my body. Fortunately it was all focused on my husband so I didn't cause any trouble. It bothered me so much that it made me realize I was manic and needed help.

I have this problem, but I am also in a mixed state right now. I want to die one minutes and then I am on the phone with someone I shouldn't be having a conversation that isn't appropriate. The problem with being bipolar and going through the hyper sex drive is that you are usually feeling manic (or somewhat manic) and you want to feel everything and everybody around you. It's like you are on a huge mountaintop and you think everyone wants you. Unfortuantely, you can find that someone that totally wants to give you want you desire. That's when the problems begin....
I am speaking from experience that being hypersexual is not just a crazy sex drive or just ovulation. Of course it is true that ovulation increases a woman's libido, but watch out for a bipolar that's manic/mixed AND ovulating!!! This has been a hard road for me personally and I hope that you find the info you are looking for. Bipolar Magazine did a cover story on this subject about 6 months ago. If you can find a copy, I highly suggest it. It will give you more insight into hypersexuality and be a great resource to show your husband. I must confess that I have never discussed this with my husband as I have a lot of guilt that goes along with this part of BPD, but kudos to you for facing it head on!

Yes, BP Magazine did an extensive article on hypersexuality in the Spring 2009 issue. Completely forgot about that article. Thanks for the reminder musikcrazy. Zoombug, you can order back issues for $7 at http://www.bphope.com/ or by calling 1-877-575-HOPE (4673).

Mania has greatly increased dopamine levels and dopamine affects your sex drive. The more dopamine you have the higher you sex drive is.
