Let your psychiatrist/family doctor know you are gaining the weight and see what they have to say. There are several mood stabilizers on the market that may work just as well for you and not cause the weight gain.

Limit your caloric intake. Only drink water. Exercise. Ask for a different medication. Get your thyroid checked.

I gained 30 lbs on abilify in like 4 weeks or so. Lamictal is not so weight sensitive.

Are you only on a mood stabilizer?

Also, welcome to the boards. :-)

I couldnt take Abilify because of side effects so I don't know much about the weight issue. My weight problems was from me self-medicating with.....herbal remedies. Talk with your doctor about the weight issues. Weight is not just vanity as some people have a hard time grasping. It also brings on other potential health problems. Let your doctors know and I am sure they can get you on something else.

Welcome to PC by the way. As you might have already guessed... this site is a great support to what you may currently be using and has a very strong bi-polar board. I hope you can find your way around and if not, I am sure that most people on here can help you get the "swing of things"

I'm personally on Lamictal and Geodon right now and have not noticed any weight issues. I actually dropped a few pounds over a month when I went to my Primary recently.

I take Lamictal (mood stabilizer) and Wellbutrin (antidepressant) because they are both weight neutral. I've actually lost weight on these meds...maybe because they kill my appetite a bit. Anyway, there are weight neutral options out there. Maybe they'll work for you, maybe not, but it's worth a try?

If the meds are stabalizing your moods and keeping you out of the hospital, then talk to your medical doctor to find out if the weight you are gaining is significant enough to increase health risks. See a nutritionist to have your weight monitored and get nutritional and exercise advice. If your medical doctor thinks that the weight gain is significant enough to cause concerns with your health and following the nutritionist's advice does not help you lose some of the weight, then ask your pdoc to switch you to a new medication.

If the meds are not stabalizing your moods, then ask your pdoc to switch your meds right away.

Just my opinion.
