I haven't slept but 3 hours in almost 5 days. I have tried Ambien, night time cold meds everything and nothing is working. I keep waiting for this to be over and I know I am in a manic phase but I don't know what I am supposed to do about it. I haven't gone this long before without sleeping maybe 3-4 days but this seems never ending.

Hi Schwandy and welcome. You might need to call your doc and tell them it' an emergency. I have taken ambien before and it knocks me out completely which I don't like so my doc switched me to seroquel which works well for me. Have you told your doc that you don't sleep for days when you're manic? There might be something else that can be prescribed that will help. I know how you feel and I hope you get some sleep soon.

You definitely need to be in contact with you physician. Several years ago I went five days with not even an hours sleep and I was seeing bugs on the wall and on my skin and my had become a froot loop and my MD admitted me to a psychiatric hospital until I could get at least four hours sleep/night. Good luck.

I agree with the others that you should call for an emergency consult with your pdoc. I hope you are able to get in with him/her and get a medication that will help. Take care and

Thanks everyone! I have never had to call on the weekend so here is hoping someone will be on so I can get some help with this.
If there isn't anyone on do you think a trip to the ER is worthwhile? I just really don't want to be admitted if I can help it.

I've been in your shoes and I started hallucinating it was so bad. How quickly can you get an appt. with your doctor? There are lots of safe meds to help you, many of which are not addicting.

I hope you catch some zzzzzzs really soon.

I have had insomnia for 4 years, I think that it is one of the characteristics that makes me undiagnosed bi polar. Can you exercise first thing in morning. How about some soothing music or tones. Isochronic Tones can work as can general meditation. I get a runner's high when I work out so that helps me overall.

I would call the pdoc and let him/her know what is going on. Not sleeping is a bad thing. The mania could spin out of control very easily. I know you don't want to be admitted, but it might be the better option at the moment.

I do think that if there is no one available to help you outpatient that a stay in the hospital would be a good option. Since (as far as I can tell) you are not considering sui and don't have plans to harm anyone else, it would most likely be a short stay; just long enough to help you get some good sleep. Of course I'm not a doctor so I can't speak for them, but that has been my experience. Staying in the hospital is not exactly fun, but becoming psychotic from not sleeping would be much, much worse since you'd end up in the hospital anyways, and probably for a longer stay. Take care and I hope that someone can help you!

You need help. Get it fast. my daughter has bipolar and one thing I have realised is that even if she isn't well there is a reluctance to do anything. Ive now got all her 'emergency' numbers - you need someone to help you and do the same thing - I hope you sleep well andvery soon.

Please give us an update on how you are doing...!

I'm slowly going into a manic phase, and instead of sleeping 10 hours, I only slept about 5, and only on and off, last night. I did however not take my sleeping tabs, as I am sure the package insert said they should not be used for more than 14 days, I've been prescribed them indefinitely. I take Zopiclone 7.5mg.

For someone who is used to 10 hours of sleep, your scenario is very scary, and I can only hope I manage to get more sleep tonight.
If I didn't respond to my sleeping tabs, I'd definitely not hesitate to contact my pdoc; regardless of weekend or not. And I would definitely administer myself to hospital, as I can ensure that my health will be closely monitored. There is something really irregular in your brain, if it can over-ride your body's natural sleeping rhythms - don't feel shy to ask for help
