Last night I woke up and smelled grilled cheese sandwiches cooking in the kitchen. Clear as day. I jumped up and ran downstairs to find the kitchen deserted, of course. This has happened to me many times before. I don't believe I was actually asleep when I smelled the grilled cheese cooking on the stove, but I may have been on the edge.
I have sleep apnea and so wake up many times a night. Perhaps there is some correlation. Any one else have any experience with this sort of thing? |

It's called olfactory hallucinating or Phantosmia, it is caused by a host of things from seizures to swollen sinuses. I'm sooooooooo glad I'm not the only one this happens too! They advise seeing your Dr. to rule out temporal lobe damage. I haven't done that, I hate Drs.

When you say edge of sleep, it brings to mind hypnogogic (edge of going into sleep) and hypnopompic (edge going out of sleep) hallucinations. They are of a sort that are pretty common and " normal". (A lot of people freak out and are much-relieved to learn this.) Of course, I don't know if they are what is happening, but it might be. I'm very familiar with them in the visual realm. They can be über-real. Like 'getting up and walking across room reaching out to touch' real. Just took a peek to refresh knowledge. Besides being fairly common, they are commonly associated with narcolepsy, insomnia and anxiety. Given that, it wouldn't be surprising if your sleep apnea is involved.
