I made an appointment with a therapist (scheduling was not easy, we ended up scheduling three weeks out). T saw me once, began discussing meds within 15 minutes of meeting me, then couldn't fit me in again for another two weeks. Called the day before that next appt and rescheduled...two weeks hence.
When do I start looking for another T?

I think now?
I would be concerned if your T is giving you meds when he barely knows you, unless you were diagnosed already? I still think you should find another T because it sounds like this one is overworked and overbooked. |

hmm its not a great start.
Yeah id be concerned with the meds, unless u are already diagnosed or you feel the t has a good (really really good) understanding of your history. How did u feel about the t when You did meet with them?? |

I need a T that's available-within reason. Yours doesn't sound like it

I'm a bit confused with the word therapist. Was it a Psychiatrist? If you didn't see a Psychiatrist that's who I would suggest trying to make an appointment with. The length of time you had to wait for an appointment is pretty average, at least where I live. As far as the cancellation I've had my Psychiatrist cancel on me before. They're humans and just like us sometimes they can miss work.
Wanting to prescribe meds within 15 minutes is quick unless you have been diagnosed already and/or your file was transferred prior to you meeting with him or her.

Thanks for your responses!
I'm consulting a psychologist for therapy. I wasn't interested in a medicalized approach and that's why I didn't look for an MD. OK, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks something might be fishy with the jump to medicate. While I do understand busy-ness (boy, do I), and it's possible that things will even out with our schedules, there was another issue for me. I'm not in a crisis, I've been managing my symptoms for decades with no sort of help whatsoever, and I've been very functional over the past five years, exceedingly so by most standards. But I know my symptoms are consistent with a bipolar diagnisis. Even though I've never had a psychotic episode, I know this is a sserious illness. And I also know that denial is not just a river in Egypt, specially for folks with this dx. It seems to me that in most fields of medicine we always try the least invasive therapy first. Is there nothing out there save meds?

There is. But you will have to search hard in the field for a person who will be willing to try the non-med route with you. Good luck.
