My psych says im bipolar, my therapist thinks im bipolar 2. Allright. What is the difference? I tried looking it up but cant find any info that explains the difference and the ones i did find used the big fancy medical doctor words that are way too big and powerfull for my little brain to handle. Can anyone but the differences in lamens terms for me.

"Bipolar" refers to mood swings, which we most often associate with periods of extreme highs (manic episodes) and terrible lows (depressive episodes).
But not everyone "swings" between those two extremes. One type of bipolar sufferer has very bad depressive periods, but the "high points" top out at a more or less "normal" level, i.e. no real symptoms of mania. This type of illness is categorized as "Bipolar II". See also the thread Will the Real Diagnosis Please Stand Up? in this forum. Talk to your doctor as much as possible about your dx. You deserve to understand what the "label" means, that's the only way it can be beneficial to your recovery, otherwise it is just a label. Your doctor owes it to you to answer your questions about it until you understand

Also, Bipolar-I's, tend to have more extreme and even violent manic episodes, and a little more milder (not really mild) depressive episodes. BP-II's suffer from more serious depressive episodes, than BP-I's.
I know it may get confusing, so that is why it is so important to discuss this with the pdoc that made your DX's. It is not a "one size fits all" sort of DX. Take care now, DE

As I understand it Bipolar 1's are rapid cyclers and Bipolar 2's experience longer periods of time in the mania and depression. I may have the 1's and 2's backwards, but the symptoms that present themselves are very much indicative of the type of BP one has.
The info given above is also very good. Hope this helps. TgrsPurr, xo
