Hi everyone--
My 15 year old daughter has been diagnosed with bipolar 2 and has been doing better on lithium and seroquel. The doc just put her on focalin for her ADHD, and since the she's started in with the horrific mood swings--anger, scraming, depression, anxiety, the whole nine yards. Anyone else out there experience similar reactions to this drug? We're waiting to her from her doctor on changing meds. Thanks. |

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is struggling right now. ADHD and Bipolar are a tricky combination to treat. I'm in the same boat with my 13 yr old. It has been a while since she was last on a stimulant for her ADHD and we're sort of sitting tight with what she's on for now.
It's not at all uncommon for stimulants to wreak havoc with people with bipolar disorder, even those on mood stabilizers. It sounds like she's pretty miserable, and I'm sure it's no cup of tea for you either. I would page the doctor tonight - don't wait any longer. If you can't get a hold of her doctor, there should typically still be someone on call who you can speak to. Are you still giving her the focallin? Was anything else changed recently? Page the doctor - this could be a potentially dangerous situation if your daughter acts impulsively when she's in this state.

I've taken a stimiulant to clear up a skin rash and it sent me up...I agree with dragonfly2 regarding calling in...
As a side note we were prescribing wellbutrin for my son for a period of time for his ADD...it's an anti-depressant that is sometimes prescribed for ADHD.

I'm not familar with the focalin you mention, but my son was dx'd ADHD (I sure wish they had left the ADD and ADHD separate dxs, but that's another topic...he's ADD, no hyperactivy) Anyhow..not sure how it affects mood swings, but he was given Strattera, which is supposed to be considered a non-stimulant ADHD med, so I can't help but wonder if that would be a useful one to check out.
Good luck and keep us posted. Sorry she (and you!) are experiencing such difficulties right now, dayton52. ![]() |
