I have bipolar and my pdoc suggested I take fish oil. Mine is a liquid that is lemony so no bad taste. Kind of expensive though - $20/month so I am not always consistent taking it.

Fish oil is good but meds are better with fish oil.......don't always believe everything you read!!! Fish oil is great for your heart though..Omega 3 you know. I take it for inflamation for my arthritis

Stay with the mood stablizers and supplement diet with the fish oil.

Yoda, would you mind sharing what brand of fish oil you use? I hate fish so much, but I've been thinking about trying some fish oil for the health, and maybe mental health benefits. Something lemony with no bad taste sounds tempting.

The one I have now is Barlean's cod liver oil. It has omega-3, epa and dha.

The only place I have found it is Drug Emporium.

Its the Omega-3 EPA that is the mood stabalizing part of the fish oil. My previous pdoc from california was into alternative treatments for depression (in my case). One has to take over 1200mg/day of the EPA omega 3 for it to be effective however.....

Yes, the omega 3 is wonderful for all the other health aspects of our life from memory to heart & sure many other things also.

I take the liquid fish oil because I heard that we don't get the full use our of the oil from the capsuls having to dissolve.

Any health food store will have the right one.....also want it to be pharmaceutical grade so that the quality is consistent.

Hope you find it was valuable in treatment as I did.

I take Wild Fish Oil Omegas and Udo's Oil. I think they have helped my mood tremendously. I also give them to my husband with depression, and they have helped him. I got off meds through a very structured life, and a lot of other things, but I don't advise anyone to do it just on the basis of Omega Oils. I think you need to use this as a supplement and stay on the mood stabilizers.

Well, it's going to sound funny, but when I'm manic, one of the things I do is remember to take my vitamins and supplements (one of them being omega 3, 6, 9) because I usually start on some massive health drive.

It seems that a lot of mood stabilisers work in conjunction with antidepressants (the antidepressant lifts your mood, the stabiliser stops it moving into mania).

In my experience it doesn't work. Then again, perhaps my manias would have been worse without the fish oils. But, despite taking them my moods have been a rollercoaster for years.

So, I really would urge you to take the medicines that are prescribed for you. Take the fish oil additionally. It can't hurt.
