So for some reason the past week I have had an intense urge to do bodily harm to a couple people who have wronged me. Yes, I know I need to talk to my pdoc about this but I'm concerned that he will have me admitted if I do.

Does anyone know if this is so? I need to tell him cause clearly we need to tweek my meds but I don't want to be committed against my will.

Any questions or insight in this area would be greatly appreciated.

You do need to tell him and he can evaluate whether you need hospitalization. It is possible medication would be all that would be done.

Love your comments, pariah, but you really can't go around hurting other people whether you'd like it or not. It's just a no-no. And yes, you do have to talk to your pdoc about it and whether or not he has you admitted because of it is just something you'll have to deal with. Because hurting other people is just something you can't do. If you do things like that you'll get admitted to "custody" (criminal or civil) a lot faster than if you just 'fess up to your pdoc. With much, much harsher possible consequences.

Well, best thing to do is probably to tell your pdoc and let him know all your feelings and what you'd like to do. He'll probably agree to tweaking your meds, but there's no way to know whether or not he would want to lock you up. That's just a chance you'll have to take. If you don't take that chance the downside possibilities are very bad. You might hurt someone and not be able to explain it to the cops. And that would be much worse than first telling it to your pdoc.

Advice: Tell your pdoc everything. Let him/her make the call.

i think there is a difference between having the urge and the actual ability to do so and decision to act upon it. can you control the urge? we all have thoughts, good and bad. are you planning on acting upon it is the question. i dont think he can lock you up for your thoughts, it is only if he believes you are going to act upon it and he has a duty to protect the people you want to harm. tarasoff is the law. he has to warn the people you are wanting to harm and the police. but if he believes its only a thought you are not going to act up he does not have to report. people say they want to hurt people every day and they are not getting locked up.

I agree 110% with kaliope. I've thought about the same things, but I've even had obsessive thoughts of harming people I LOVE & would NEVER want to see harmed because I have a history of issues with intrusive thoughts. If you can't hold yourself back from committing some sort of violence, either to take out your urges or to hold them back... Well, even if you're not harming anyone & aren't going to, you should talk to your pdoc about what's going on. The thoughts are distressing you & you don't deserve that extra stress on your shoulders.

I highly doubt he would admit you for this. homicidal and suicidal thoughts are just another perk of this wouldful illness we all have (sarcasm). just be sure to tell ur pdoc. a slight increase in your meds may be enough to cancel these out.
