I got this excerpt from Webmd:
"Mixed bipolar disorder is defined by periods of mania and depression that occur at the same time, or in rapid sequence. These combined manic-depressive periods are called mixed mania or mixed manic episodes: Mania in mixed episodes usually involves irritability, racing thoughts and speech, and overactivity or agitation. Depression in mixed bipolar disorder is similar to "regular" depression, with feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, low energy, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, and thoughts of suicide." Also, this: "For example, a person in a mixed manic episode could be crying uncontrollably while announcing they have never felt better in their life. Or they could be exuberantly happy, only to suddenly collapse in misery. A short while later they might suddenly return to an ecstatic state". I thought I was in a mixed state with my recent episode because I was manic, but cried easily. Pdoc said no, I was probably crying from frustration and anxiety. My diagnosis- Bipolar I with recent manic episode....not a mixed state.

That description of a mixed state almost sounds more like borderline personality which I've been labeled before as too so that only confuses me more

Honestly, I wouldn't diagnose yourself as being in a mixed state, leave that to a Pdoc. I was convinced I was in a mixed state with my recent hospitalization, but I wasn't I was manic- but the irritable kind. I'm not a doc, but you sound hypomanic to me.

Do you have to work the rest of the week?... Can you take any time off?
Once I went from hypomanic to truly manic I could no longer work. One, so I didn't get fired and two, for the safety of my patients!

When I get hypomanic I am extremely irritable and very anxious. I haven't been officially diagnosed yet though...
Is a mixed state only for those with bp1? So much of this is confusing for me... |

To be diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder, the person must have had at least one manic or mixed episode. So, yes, mixed state can only happen if you're Bipolar I.

Visioneer,
I recently had true mania exactly.. "one" ..time, after hypomania and my diagnosis was changed to Bipolar I. Having Bipolar I doesn't mean you have more episodes per se, however the diagnosis is stating that you have had either mania, mixed episode or psychosis, as part of an episode. Here is what the Pdoc is suppose to go by to dx Bipolar II: DSM IV criteria Criteria for Bipolar II disorder in DSM IV are as follows: A. Presence (or history) of one or more major depressive episodes B. Presence (or history) or at least one hypomanic episode C. There has never been a manic episode or a mixed episode D. The mood symptoms in Criteria A and B not better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. E. The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Lastly, Regarding this comment, by you: >>>>I'm also not diagnosed Bipolar I, but II/NOS because I have some more severe characteristics not usually associated with II, but less often and less severe than would be diagnosed as Bipolar I. Thank goodness for that, too.<<<<<< I find your enthusiasm offensive. You may want to be just a tad subtle when you're posting on a forum that does have members afflicted with Bipolar I. Thanks

It's okay... I may be a bit touchy, since my diagnoses was just changed on Sept 6th to Bipolar I.
