I've been home on short term disability for 5 weeks (but of course someone dropped the ball and I haven't received one check yet) and I'm getting bored out of my mind. I don't want to do mundane chores...who wants to do that....plus my house is clean, my laundry is done, have groceries....what the heck else is there?
I'm in Ohio and it's dreary and rainy out side. I've done my fair share of reading, puzzles, going to the library, posting on this forum and some shopping. I can't afford to do any expensive activities right now. I'm better when my husband is home, but he works 11 hour days, then bowls on a league twice a week, plus is restoring an old car- so many hours in the garage after work. I see my Pdoc tomorrow and I really think I'm just gonna have to tell him he needs to let me go back to work the last week of Oct., that would give me over a week to prepare. I just can't stand it!...not to mention it's lonely!

It sounds like you are ready to get back to work. I hope your pdoc writes you the letter.

I knew when I went to the psych hospital my life was going to change for awhile, but I had no idea it would be for this long. However, I admit I needed a break, definitely needed to gain perspective on my life and the stress I and my employer were putting on me.

I wish I could afford some time off I've been having such bad days at work lately. Hope the time off has been good to you

It has been good to me... I'm sorry you can't time off. However, I didn't ASK for the time off, I took it. They had no choice.

If you get stuck with a longer period of time off, maybe volunteer work would be a good way to keep busy?
Many nonprofit organizations can use office help as well as more typical volunteer jobs like tutoring, spending time with the elderly, assembling mailings, being a docent at a zoo/aquarium/museum, ushering for live theater performances (you get a comp ticket if you do that!) etc. Depending on your skills, availability, and organizations in your area, there are usually lots of options. I mentioned office help because if you have some skills in that area, then it's the kind of thing that isn't usually very involved to get started on, while things like tutoring often require training that's only offered periodically. There are also an increasing number of online volunteer opportunities, but sometimes it's nice to get out of the house and have a little social interaction. (Can you tell that I was a volunteer coordinator in a previous life? ![]() |

Your post got my attention. I am on full-time disability from now on.....And I used to be a college professor! I sure know about boredom. Right now I am writing a book. That helps to pass the time. I also belong to a social club, read, get out with friends twice a week ( just for a cup of coffee, if the budget is tight), do a bit of volunteering, play computer games, and have an official "date" with my husband once a week. Couples have to make time for each other! Of course, I also keep up with certain TV shows, rent movies, am on Facebook, and go on PC sometimes.
I sure hope you can go back to work---when you are ready. But, there is a life during disability. I so wish I could go back to my job, but..... By the way, I also have physical health problems that limit my ability to do housework. Sure wish you could come over and help me with mine! Hang in there! ![]() |

Saw Pdoc...I'm going back to work on Oct 24th, but he said no on-call duties for at least one month and wed. off until I can work 5 days in a row. I called my work and they had no problem with it. So, yeay!
