I was only on it for about a week and a half, but once my dose got higher, or if my son got a rash, I needed to stop nursing. I tried, but we just aren't ready. My son ended up dehydrated, because he refused to drink anything. pdoc isn't going to be happy, but she had mentioned another alternative last time as well, so hopefully she will still be open to it. and besides that, i was having some icky side effects as well:: headache, achy body, small rashes that would appear randomly, and this was all on the short time i was on it. I hope she's not mad at me......eeks lol

Did your son quit nursing? I'm assuming you didn't since it was only 1.5 wks so you were still at intro dose. How old is your son?

Did you report your rashes, however random, to your pdoc?

While I didn't get a rash, Lamictal was bad for me. I ended up with achey, flu-like symptoms and swollen lymph glands. I tried it twice, almost a year apart and had the same reaction.

As far as it passing through breast milk, it probably does, and if your son has a rash, he may be allergic to it. I would call your pdoc to let him/her know what happened, and stay in touch with you son's pediatrician.
Thanks for this!

No, i couldn't quit nursing (after one day my son got dehydrated) so I quit taking the meds instead...and I also had the achy feeling, my neck felt swollen and stiff....she had mentioned having me on seroquel during the day too. Hope she's still up for that. I really need something for my symptoms...they are getting out of control.

I'm sorry that you and your son had a bad reaction, but am really glad that you're a responsible mum who is doing the best for her son. Actually, nursing your child is protective against depression, as well as being best for baby.

I do hope that they find some meds you can take while nursing, to control your symptoms while you're giving your son the best start.

Thank you. the truth is, we are not quite ready to quit nursing, him or myself. before I had found out that I was bipolar, I was planning on nursing at least to a 1 and a half. I kind of feel like pdoc is forcing me to quit nursing, when I am 100% sure there are other medications that I can take that are safe while nursing......

That's one reason I refused to see a pdoc after my son was born... I didn't want them to say I had to be on meds, and force me to stop nursing my son. In retrospect if I'd been seen then I'd have got the correct diagnoses thirteen years earlier, but then the nursing of him seemed to keep me stable in ways that are hard to describe to a pdoc... particularly males, and particularly any doctor who thinks that symptoms can only be controlled by aggressive use of meds.

Stick to your guns. How old is your son now? Forgive me if you've said elsewhere and I missed it.

Seroquel is just fine with nursing. so is lamictal, there are a total of 0 cases of serious reactions in kids. Look for the sticky post in the meds section of the forum for more info!
