I'm having a tubal done tomorrow and am a bit concerned about if the stuff they give me to put me to sleep or pain meds could mess with my bipolar. Has anyone found that either one effected the bipolar?

i've been "put under" before and didn't have any problems. Not sure about pain meds.
You should definitly talk to your pdoc before the surgery and direct these questions to a professional med person. Don't be afraid to talk to the surgeon prior to the appt. Best of Luck

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the biggest issues I'm going to face is sleeping off the anasthesia (I know that is spelled wrong!) because that stuff knocks me off my butt. I'm always loopy when I leave the hospital and usually end up sleeping the rest of the day.

I have a bad reaction to some of the local anesthetics commonly used in dentistry - I think it's because they have epinephrine in them to reduce bleeding. But it basically precipitates a really high-intensity panic attack. It feels like my whole body is going into shock, but instead of passing in 5 minutes, it lasts for half an hour or so before starting to wane. It's happened time and again. So now they use stuff without epinephrine, and just have to deal with the fact that I'll bleed a lot more than they're used to dealing with.
Anyway, that could potentially interact with bipolar symptoms, but since I can avoid it, I'm going to try not to find out! Doesn't sound like you'll have to worry about anything like that.

I'll be thinking about you, Becca. It's usually not a difficult procedure. I'm crossing fingers & saying a prayer that all goes especially well for you.

The only surgery I've ever had is a c-section but I can't say if it caused any triggering because I also had post pardum depression really bad.
![]() I hope your surgery goes smoothly!

There is some research suggesting ketamine helps bipolar depression but I only found two studies and both had small populations so it is inconclusive at this time. Ask your CRNA or anesthesiologist what they think.

Ketamine is only available through a research study.
I have ECT every 4 weeks and am put under. It doesn't cause any problems. Also, I just had my gallbladder taken out and was under for about an hour and a half. Again I had no problems. |

Good Luck with your surgery.
I have had about 9 or 10 surgeries and it never affected by BP. I was even on pain meds for a very long time and it didn't affect the BP. Try to relax, get through it, and you will be fine. I PROMISE!!!

If you have any doubt, you should talk to the anesthesiologist. About 10 years ago, I had a D&C done, and with all the meds I was on, he would not put me under. It was a pain being awake, although they gave me pain killers.
I have had major surgery since then, with no problems. I think it depends upon what meds you are on, and how you react. Good luck with the surgery.
