Recently a doc told me that there was a relationship between those with childhood asthma and bipolar/mood disorders... Anyone else here had asthma as a child now have mood issues? Just curious...

1st I hear of it, but my mom said I had asthma when I was really young, and it disapeared soon after we moved closer to the ocean. I have no recollection of this, we moved here when I was 4...

Seriously? I had asthma as a kid, now bipolar. I'd be interested in knowing more about this if you find out anything.

Here is a link to one study about this.

I do have asthma, so this is interesting. Doesn't really change anything, but it is interesting.

Same here....I have had asthma for as long as I can remember--almost died from it as a child. Now many years later, I've been diagnosed with BP. I take a cocktail of meds for asthma and a cocktail for BP. I was just thinking today over dinner how crazy it is that I on so many meds! Interesting association.

Keep
Thanks for this!

I had asthma and severe allergies. I hope there isn't a connection between asthma and bipolar because my oldest has asthma. My middle child has multiple allergies. It will absolutely break my heart if one of my children is ever diagnosed as bipolar.

It didn't sound like it is a causation issue, just a correlation.

Well, given the hereditary nature of our BP'ness I wouldn't be surprised if there is a strong likelihood if one or both end up w/ it! I wouldn't be brokenhearted, just extra empathetic and supportive! If there are warning signs as children I would keep a close lookout for them. Maybe even, raise their awareness and educate them as soon as possible. I remember feeling all alone, and actually just thought I simply "felt/experienced more emotions" more than others.

I often think about my upbringing, alcoholic father, depressed grandfather who committed suicide at 50. There's a huge environmental relationship to my organic illness, but hereditary is questionable. However, one thing for sure, they don't teach children how to become emotionally intelligent in school. I think that is our job, and I have no idea how to do it.

One blessing in disguise is that there is evidence that suggests that BP and genius are closely related. Meaning the possibility to be genius by BP people is increased... Or so I hear from my doc...

Interesting. Asthma since birth and allergies. Early onset bipolar as well. I'm still dealing with asthma. I just remembered my mom telling me that when I was born I kept turning blue every time she took me home from the hospital.

thanks for posting the link between asthma and anxiety disorders. it explains a lot about my brother - who has severe asthma - and his anxiety issues, and it also sheds light on the issues faced by his daughter (also asthmatic and possibly bipolar).

i suffer from anxiety issues myself and wonder if there is a link between epilepsy and anxiety / bipolar issues.

Hmmm, Get this, when I joined the military one of the questions I lied about during the process was if I ever had asthma; anyone that had asthma was immediately rejected! What do they know that we don't! Conspiracy!!!!

Hmm. Not heard about this before now...and when I first read your original post I was admittedly skeptical. However, reading the replies and seeing just how many others with asthma have bipolar disorder did surprise me. I don't believe there is a high level of scientific evidence supporting this and it may just be more a coincidental correlation between the two than a direct link.

Now, I do actually have both a minor form of asthma and a severe form of bipolar, but whether or not the two are related at all I cannot say. However the causing environmental and/or social factors which can possibly cause asthma may also be possible causes and/or triggers for bipolar. Hence the correlation between the two.

Yeah, I was kind of skeptical too. Read the article and they seemed to have a better case for the panic disorders. Which... made sense to me as not being able to breathe must make one rather prone to panicking. I would(!) Then not knowing when it will hit or whatever. Yeah, I could see that.

Since the question was if anyone else had asthma/BP, those whose answer would be "no" would be less like to post, right? So, anyway, in the interest of balance or whatever ... Nope. No asthma.
Thanks for this!

Innerzone's logic makes complete sense to me. I also do not have asthma.

Unhappy Guy-I had a seizure disorder when I was a child, and I have heard that there is a positive correlation between epilepsy and depression. I'm not sure if the same holds true for bipolar disorder.

Same here - no asthma, no allergies. Nothing unusual health-wise as a kid at all, other than a freaktastic strep infection under my kneecap when I was 8.

Agree with everything you said. Thanks (:
