I think we've all been outraged by the unkind, inconsiderate and ignorant things people have been told in the thread on the worst "support" we ever got. So to flip that around, I'd love to hear about the most supportive thing you've ever been told.
For me, it was my husband saying that he doesn't see the disorder, he only sees me as a whole person and that who I am and what I mean to him hasn't changed since the dx. ![]() So how about you? What's the kindest, most understanding, most accepting thing that anyone has told you in response to learning that you have bipolar? Or just about you in general?

My husband told me recently: "I love you no matter what. I'm not walking out and if our marriage ends it will have to be you who ends it."
I know you asked for one but I appreciated these two so much: Associate Rector: "Being bipolar does not change how I experience you as a child of God or how I view you as a person. You are a wonderful person and you are not the bipolar. It's an illness like any other illness." Rector: "The bipolar changes nothing about how I view you or feel about you. Bipolar is just an illness like diabetes or any other chronic condition. It's not who you are."

My boyfriend said something similar to that tnlibrarian!
Also my parents telling me that they support me in my life decisions and my sister showing that she loves me despite the ugly she's seen from me. ![]()

I wish I could say that the most supportive stuff I have been told came from outside of this forum.
My bf has said the like of the above posts, however he's also called me psycho amongst other things and that kind of stands in the way of feeling supported. ![]() Sorry I'm a downer today. |

From a friend at church: "Bipolar people are very creative" and "my two best friends are bipolar." Her acceptance, not just of me, but of all of us with bipolar, has really meant a lot to me.

My p-doc in our last appointment and in prior appointments as well talked about ways that I can help myself. Made me feel less hopeless (I have enough baggage to be objectively justified in feeling hopeless...)

When I told my medical doctor he smiled and said, "interesting. My three best friends are bipolar." His words made up for so much negative from so many others.

My mother always tells me "You are smart and strong Czech" (nationalist, but funny and always perks me up).
And being told I can get through.

The most supportive thing that has ever been said to me was from my Psychologist of 15 years. My Daughter was away at college and experiencing a moderate depression.
The idea that she could be bipolar, and experience the struggles I have in life devastated me. I said to my Psychologist that I had never really told anyone how hard my life had really been. My Psychologist said that neither she nor anyone else would ever know. For some reason I felt this great relief. My daughter was 20 at the time, she went on antidepressants for 2 years, never had a manic episode, got off them, is 30 now, and appears to be doing well. |
