Are any of you or have any of you taken Neurontin? I'm not asking for me but due to my MIL, who started it a month ago. She has started acting very out of touch while on it--she gets confused, her memory is terrible, she can't follow a conversation, falls asleep in the middle of conversations. Is this typical for the drug?

ok, i was on neurontin for like two years... and when i started takin it, a friend of mine warned me that it had made her dad pretty "flaky" while he was on it... yeah, i had so many side effects mentally as far as brain processing... and the bad part was i didn't realize they were side effects until well into my treatment... i finally mentioned to my doc at the time that i was having trouble thinking straight... transposing numbers & thoughts... that i'd go to say one word, but the opposite would actually come out... that i was reading street signs backwards... and his response was "we have to get you off that immediately!"

fun times... i wish i had known sooner that what i was experiencing was drug related... i thought i was just confused/that my brain was so full up with everything else i was going through that i wasn't concentrating enough...

most of the side effects gradually went away after i stopped taking it... one thing that seems to have been permanent, however, is the damage it did to my memory... short term & long term... abilities to recount things from the past & the abillity to form new memories... i jokingly refer to it as "swiss cheese holes in my brain" when i try to explain to folks just how it is that a 32 year old has memory lapses that are more typical of someone in their 80's... and i've been off it for over 8 years now... pretty sure if my memory was going to recover, it would have by now...

my advice: if you notice anything off... i mean ANYTHING... encourage her to run it by the doc... some of the side effects can be temporary, but others not so much... better to be safe than sorry!!!

i'm so glad some folks have such positive experiences with neurontin... i will say, once my doc took me off it, i had just as much positive effects regarding the medication's overall purpose in my treatment when the doc switched me to trileptal... i stayed on that for several years without any issues of note...

best of luck to you guys in finding a regimen that works best for her

The first week or 2 I was on it for my fibro pain I was pretty loopey ... Now it doesnt seem to do anything for me so I rarely bother taking it ..

Your MIL needs to notify her doctor about hows shes feeling and if shes not aware you should call and advise them .

Good Luck
