I have never posted in this forum before because I didn't want to intrude. I always post in DD. But, I'm looking for some answers. If anyone could help, I would appreciate the response. You can PM me if you like.
My sister-in-law was just involuntarily hospitalized with bipolar disorder - she was having an "episode"? The Pdoc said she would not be released until she started to conform to her treatment. Apparantly, she has not been taking her meds. She was diagnosed about 2 years ago. This last "episode" as he called it, she was beligerant to the extreme. I would like to understand more about living with bipolar disorder so I can understand where she is coming from. Also, I would like to know how to help her when she gets in those places where she won't help herself. Is that common, to not want to help yourself? Why would a person not want to take their meds so this doesn't happen? Any comments would be appreciated. Thank You, Songbird

you are to be commended for wanting to help your SIL. everyone is different about taking meds. she may be resistant and think that she can handle BP on her own. " episode" makes me think that she is probably more manic than depressive. i imagine the doctor wants to be sure that he has her medication levels correct before he sends her home.
read up on bipolar. there's tons of infromation here on this site and ask us questions. you're in the right place, xoxox pat |

One of the worst things about classic bipolar is that when a person begins a manic episode they feel really, really good, so they don't take their meds; nothing's wrong, they feel great, they don't want to feel bad again. Unfortunately, that's not the way things work out.
Pat's advice is great...read as much as you can about BP...there's tons of stuff online and at your library. if you need to vent or ask questions here, feel free...we're here to help! DJ
