Good Evening Milly! There is some great info on this site to explain it. I was diagnosed with it last year. I started noticing I had it when I was thinking I was having some severe mood swings.
If you ever need to talk I'm all ears!

unlike clinical depression, bipolar has extreme swings from up to down and then back up, etc. i have bipolarII and that means my lows outweigh my highs. xoxox pat

You said you have been told you might have it, by whom?
You may or may not have it, the best and only person who should make the DX, is a pdoc and/or T, preferably a pdoc, so that if you need meds to stabilize you, the pdoc then can go ahead and prescribe them, also refer you to someone for talk therapy, or whatever therapy youd benefit from.
Bipolar is not a death sentence, so if you are DXed with it, understand there is treatment, and if you are compliant with it, you'll do fine.
Bipolar and other disorders can have similar behaviours, you can even have more than one disorder, so that is another reason for proper DX, by a mental health professional.
Various websites, info sites, books, etc. can introduce you to Bipolar and other disorders, but please do not fall into the trap of "self-diagnosis", though it tempts one, it can also add unecessary stress, so try to make an appt for an evaluation, besides reading up on Bipolar.
As you can already see, the members that come to this forum, can share their experiences and support, they are terrific, which I'm sure you'll find some comfort.
Please take care, and if you wish, let us know what happens, we are here. Question What is Bipolar?
