Kay Jamison argues that the old term was more descriptive. I agree. Which one do you like better?

Bipolar, but only because I'm more used to it. I have 0 problem with manic depressive, and agree that it is more descriptive.

I think manic-depressive describes it better, but if I've got to be labeled as having it, I prefer bipolar.

I like bipolar because I like the image of the earth with the north and south pole that comes along with it for me... I don't get offended when someone says 'manic depressive' I just tend to think, "they are old fashioned." It's like someone saying "Sugar Diabetes" or "Juvanile Diabetes," both are old fashioned terms that are inaccurate, but people still use them.
The term that I wish would change is "mood disorder." That's the one I don't like. Because it gives the impression that you just need an attitude adjustment, or that it's just all in your head, and promotes stigma.

the word bipolar means nothing to me, it has no feeling it is clinical rubbish they can keep in the notebook.
manic depressive is more tangible... or....panic expressive manic impressive! i also have trouble with the word 'borderline' in bpd...but I really don't know what else it can be called? and of course I also have a gripe with attention deficit! and then again in half an hour I might not care about anything diabolical complicated person would do me. And maybe the people with less sensitivities can conform to a sick society... just pondering... maybe the those folks could have a label like "obsessive concrete disorder"... or "earth sensitivity deficit" ... |

I like that bipolar is shorter to write
![]() ![]() But in actual answer to the question, I lean towards Manic-Depressive. Why? "Bipolar" gets tossed around in reference to anything that isn't one way all the time. Which is annoying. I think it would be less likely that people would misappropriate the term Manic-Depressive. Also, and maybe this is just a weird thought on my part, but thinking on the word bi-polar, it is two poles, right? ( ![]() How far apart are those poles? Doesn't really say, does it? The earth's poles are not the only poles. A magnet has 2 poles, and if it is small, they are not that far apart are they? See where I'm going with this? In a sense, the misappropriation is right, even if ignorantly so. "Manic-Depressive" though? Gives us a clue that those poles are not simply "2", but that they are in fact far apart and more extreme than your average bear experiences. Sure, someone would say they're "up", but would they say they were manic? Probably not so readily. (How many times have we all heard, "Everyone has their ups and downs." Well, NSS. Let's talk magnitude.) Quote:
Emotional Regulation Disorder (ERD) There are actually a number of names that it is called in various places, but that's the one I heard someone talk about once, and it seemed a good one. (The basis of where the origin of the term "borderline" is wildly outdated, and I think you guys deserve better. ![]() Oh! And I like your new avatar! |

I prefer the ERD cos I cannot regulate for the life of me!...and I suppose that makes me act out all borderline which is 'one way or tuther'... but keeping in mind that either way it's seriously unregulated! ![]() thanks Dr Monkey (unclinical clinictic clinician) |

I just googled her, yup I have her book touched with fire. She's pretty awesome as far as I can remember. Last time I read her was 2007-or-2008. So I can barely recall but I loved her theory on creation from above-and- below. But I can't recall if I had an opposed view, I think I did not sure. Cuz they stated most creative amazing pieces came after deep depression, breakups etc. I beg to disagree.. But there's truth in that as well!

Uhhhh, think I was supposed to vote and THEN post. But ... posted and went just now to vote and it told me I already had. Pretty sure I didn't though. Did I? Lol. Might be having cognitive difficulties. Is there a MD in the house, so I can get my brain checked?
Or.... a coat checker? 'Cause that'd work at this point too. Just toss it up there with the hats. I'll retrieve it when it starts behaving itself. (You do have long-term storage, right?) (Haha. I wrote that then suddenly shouted out, "Omg, long-term storage!" And wrote note to take lock off empty (NOT long-term) storage unit, because the free dealie is almost over. Would've forgotten! Again with the brain check...) Why keep a lock on an empty unit? Because I'm a thrifty weirdo with a committment issue, that's why. What was the question again? Right. Prefer which? Manic-Depressive. Have both going on now and am hell on a Tilt-A-Wheel. |

I prefer bipolar because as someone who is more bipolar 2, I don't really get fully manic so the manic part of manic-depressive doesn't at all describe me.

I don't care what it is called. It's the same to me.
Personally, I prefer to call myself moody and sometimes crazy. The actual label only matters so the doctors know what board to blindly stab at while playing pin the medication on the patient. |

I personally don't like either.
I know the doctors must have a diagnosis/name to bill your insurance. No illness sounds nice and pleasant . Diabetes? Nope Congestive heart failure? Nope Cancer? Nope .... etc etc It all sucks.

I like the term, potato head. Nut sack would be proper sometimes as well. My personal favorites are sensitive and creative, so we can put it all on a positive note.. However, crackhead, brilliant, emo, excentric, witty, etc etc would hit the target well.
