My p-doc suggested Tegretol as an alternative to Geodon. Prozac takes good care of the depressive side of things for me, so I am primarily interested in how well Tegretol suppresses mania. It would also be lovely if it could prevent migraines the way Depakote does, but without weight gain.

Experiences?

I take tegretol and it has been a wonder drug for me. I started taking it in May, and since July I've been pretty stable. yay. I also take Geodon and Lamictal. You do know that Geodon is an antipsychotic and tegretol is a mood stabilizer, right? You might just need to add the tegretol and not get rid of the geodon.

Edit: It does cause weight gain. I've gained 5 lbs since being on it.

I'm on tegretol and geodon. I am looking to get rid of geodon because of the embarassing sexual side effects. I can't really distinguish what tegretol does for me because since being diagnosed I've been on the same 3 meds

I am trying to get rid of Geodon because of sexual side effects, too. Other than that it is a wonderful drug...

I was on it for about a year. In high dosages, it makes you 'drunk', but once my dosage was adjusted it was fine. I had zero side effects and only switched to Lithium coz state doesn't provide XR Tegratol...

My county provides Lithium XR and Depakote XR, so I hope they provide Tegretol XR, too. What a pity that your state did not want to pay for it!

Yeah, they pretty much suck in the health-care front. Right now I cant even see a T coz I'd need a day off for each appt as free healthcare is not available weekends, save for a very slow ER...

Yup. Within 20 minutes. Most effective at an hour or so. I wonder if it would stop working that way if you took it every day for BP.

Based on the responses, it is worth trying. My GP said that it can be a maintenance migraine-preventative drug, just like Depakote.

I have run into this problem looking for low-cost therapy. Such therapy is provided on a sliding scale by interns supervised by licensed clinicians. Some clinics used to have Saturday hours, but no more. The best I could get is a 6 o'clock appointment (which means I will be leaving work earlier than usual but not too bad). Why can't these interns work on Saturdays? Isn't it clear that their clientele needs Saturday hours? Beats me how the system can be so mal-adjusted, even in the non-profit non-government sector.

It made me really dopey. And I lost a ton of weight (which I put back on with lithium!) I hated it.

The only time I used any meds was topamax. It's used for migraines too. It was awesome! Until I felt like I couldn't retrieve my memories, I felt like a computer that couldn't get in its hard drive. Stopped using it ever since.

Yes, for migraines and for weight loss, too, which would have helped. The problem is, there is no proof that it works as a MS.

So Hamster, I am curious, did you switch to tegretol? My pdoc suggested trying this over lithium. Of course I am always concerned about weight gain and acne with any med. If you are taking it, what has your experience been?

I took it a few times, I think it worked ok for me. The last time I took it though I was also on lithium, and a few antipsychotics, so I can't really remember too much, but what I do remember is that when we added it to the lithium, before adding the others it did seems to help quite a bit.

I am seeing my doctor on the 13th. Tegretol sounds attractive (adding Topomax for weight loss sounds attractive, too) but I am concerned that I would be left without AP, and my dx is BP I with psychotic features. I know Geodon takes care of the psychotic features for me, but Tegretol is not supposed to do that.

Will talk to the doctor about it. Will let you know what we decide.
