No -- I usually take diphenhydramine (Benedryl) and/or doxylamine succinate (active ingredient in Nyquil).

Maybe not the healthiest of things, but when I was in the psych ward, they give me Benedryl to sleep.

I take seroquil however my son whom is 14 was just diagnosed at the beginning of the year takes melatonin, it helps him. He chooses not to be medicated at this point and I stand behind him on that 100%

I sometimes take Benadryl on the recommendation of my GP. It helps. I think that Melatonin contributes its fair share, but it does not solve the whole problem alone. I need something else: Temazepam, Elavil, or Benadryl.

Do your guy's med Dr not tell you getting sleep is the most important part of managing bp? Mine does, she of course would like me on a mood stabilizer as well but I work in peoples mouth I refuse to be altered in anyway due to the daily dangers I already face in the field.

Don't really feel like I have needed it lately (seroquel pretty much zonks me for at least 8 straight.) but I used to take every day. Also added montmorency cherry juice.

Every time I have tried it I end up feeling more wired, more alert. I don't know why, but I gave up on this route. The Valerian has been working ok so far. I've tried so many sleeping pills, and antipsychotics for sleep, and ya they did help me sleep, with bad after math too, dependance on them for sleep, and the meds themselves contributed to even more problems with my moods, rapid cycling and mania.

ManicMostdays, yes my dr's have all told me this. And it's true for me, once my sleep goes, so does everything else. Sleep deprivation messes with every single part of your body and mind, makes good sense.

I have found it does help me but there is what I call a success- window to it. If I take it more than an hour before I go to sleep, if something comes up and I dont get to lay down at the time I had planned (which, with 6 kids still living at home happens more often than u can imagine) then it does me no good at all! I have tried otc sleep meds like tylenol PM for instance and they have a weird anti-effect on me. I feel every nerve in my body tense up and the slightest little ache or pain I have seems intensified 100 times over! One night I had a PAPER CUT for cryin out loud and it felt like my thumb was sliced half off! I couldnt get to sleep at all. Took only about 3 nights of trying before I ditched the idea of using those.

I guess it is fair to say that the majority of people do not take it because they take something stronger. That's how I interpret the results.

It makes me feel really weird! It doesn't work for me either, makes me feel like when I was a kid and I'd stay up really late or get up in the middle of the night, awake, a bit out of it and wired too. But I'm always kind of wired. It's just a strange sensation.

Benedryl works, loooove zopiclone and seroquel was alright too but, none of those will definitely work for me...and none will keep me asleep either so, I try not to care about sleep anymore.

Nothing I can do about it except learn to function without it.

Eventually I'll pass out if I need to!

I have some odd insect-bite type itching, so I have been using Benadryl AND it helps with sleep. I am wondering if it is habit-forming. Do you know?

I don't but I'd like to try it. I take Seroquel 50mg and now realize how dependent I am on it, so I want to try to wean down of of that and add Melatonin but I have a feeling its gonna make me wired too.
Nyquil and Benadryl do that to me.

I used to take Restoril under my old Dr. but evidently that is also a benzo, so new doc (I'm actually now on my 3rd shrink) won't prescribe it for me.

I did love the Restoril it worked great for me.

From my understanding, anything that puts you to sleep can be habit forming but, is it physically addictive? No. The effect can wear off though so, use sparingly.

What differentiates "habit forming" from "physically addictive"?

One is just in your mind...no physical withdrawl like seizures.

Think quitting pot versus quitting morphine.
Thanks for this!

My GP emailed the following:

Your can develop tolerance to Benadryl, meaning that is stops being as effective, but it's not habit forming. You would be fine taking it at night for sleep.

I wonder: if I jump from med to med - say take Benadryl today and Elavil tomorrow and then back again - would I circumvent that "wearing off" effect?

I take Alteril, which has melatonin in it. If it doesn't work, I also have Ambien. But they say melatonin effects insulin production, which in turn affects blood sugar, so something else I have to watch. Sigh.
