I have been looking for pants for two weeks. I need black dress pants for work. Think I can find any?? How hard could it be says bf. So he went with me last night... ha ya right. Nothing fits, and it's fine I have to hem them, I have to hem every pair, but do they not make dress pants in my waist size. Everything made me look like I had droopy drawers.

There are not many stores here, but I have two left that I haven't checked. Otherwise I don't know what I am gonna wear tomorrow. I checked all the thrift store too just in case.

I am starting to get nervous now tho. OMG I hope this is not like all my other jobs where I talk to no one, do my job and leave, like a ghost. Part of my reason for going to work is social. And I am worried that if I do not make the right first impressions then I will not be able to break the mold I set. And this is my bf's place of employment, so he already knows most of these people, adding to my nervousness.

And what if they don't train me, or show me where things are, or what I am supposed to be doing, and then I fail. What if my bosses ( three in total ) don't like me, or are mean or nasty. I have not met any of them yet, since I had no interview or anything.

What if I have to be the quite loner, with the silly lunch box, and have to sit in the corner on breaks by myself. Or my shoes are ugly, what shoes do you even where with dress pants, when you have to be on your feet cleaning for 8 hours. Runners? Won't that look weird?

black pants of a polyester and cotton blend. That is what my manual says. What is that. Polyester, uggh k not like they are going to check the label in my pants. Says cross trainer for shoes, ok so doesn't say anything about colour. I wish they were more specific, provided pictures of the other staff haha. I hate this, this is stuff I will stress over.

Anika, it's going to be okay.

Okay, pants. It's hard to find pants that fit. In my size (which is fat size ) They think all big ladies have the giant, huge, puffy hips, thighs, and buts. Which I don't. Gods forbid that maybe, just maybe, humans all come in different shapes regardless of "dress size." So, big lady pants all have these extra rounded out areas in the hips, which on me look like ears.

My advice on pants is to look for anything that is "boot cut" or "straight leg." Even if they are a bit big, maybe you can find something that hangs nicely. My son has your issue. He's only six but he already has this issue where he's too tall for the pants that fit him around the middle, and too skinny for the pants that fit him in the legs. Luckily little boy pants come with elastic in them that you can make them smaller on the waist, but he could easily put a pillow on his butt and it would fill in the puffiness....

Shoes... not trainers. Not heals. You're going to need a comfy flat, but not a dress shoe. Something dark and closed toed. Maybe a boot or something like that.

As for the work place. If they don't train you that's their own fault. You won't fail because they don't train you. They will fail you by not training you. If your boyfriend works there the people probably are not that bad, unless all he does is complain about them. It will be hard at first to get to know people, but you're a nice and kind person. I'll give you "mommy" advice. Just be yourself and you'll make a friend. Not everyone will be friends, of course.

When I first started I was really shy here. Now I have some "work friends" who are pretty good. And I made one friend who is actually a good friend. So, just think positive, it will be okay.

As for bosses... hopefully they are not mean. Like I said, unless your boyfriend has cmoplained, then I wouldn't worry right now.

You're going to to great! I just know it! Good luck looking for pants. I really hate shopping.

Thanks dh, just be myself. OK I think I can. This place is out of my comfort zone for sure, first you have the guests, which for the most part are wealthy, it's an expensive ski resort, but hopefully they are mostly happy and nice.

I know the CEO and owner from staff parties, they seem ok. My bf's job is highly stressful and hard, and they expect a LOT. But we will have extremely different jobs so I shouldn't let his horror stories get to me. Not to mention different bosses.

A lot of the staff are young, hip, cool whatever have you. The clicky snowboarders. Loud, funny, outgoing... seems to be common for what I have seen since I snowboard there. When I am around louder, outgoing, more dominant types, that is when I get really quite. I don't know how to talk loud, command a room, display alpha whatever. I just don't want to get into that this time. I don't want to feel meek, cause it doesn't feel good.

I know a few people from yoga that also work there, oh hey I forgot one of my yoga instructors works there too different area. It's a huge place, with tons of staff. I just want to get off on the right foot. Ok breathe ....... it will be ok.

Okay boot cut, I can do that. One of the two stores I have left is Reitmans, I don't know if you have that down there, but I think they have petite sizes. And dark shoes, walmart should have something and not to expensive. My cross trainers are florescent yellow, like blinding, so I'll not do that.

Yellow shoes!! Awesome!! Yeah, Walmart will have black boring trainers for cheap, for sure. I don't know Reitmans. Walmart here actually has a really nice line of work clothes called George. I get a lot of stuff there. They actually have plus sized petit (which is me, short and fat ) I mean, they don't require hems. Nice quality stuff, too. They have petits here from 0-22 and no ears on their pants. Check that out too.

Well, I bet with that many staff members, you're bound to find someone to mix with. I used to do theatre, so I'm good a "role playing." I just pretend I"m a character in a play when I'm at work. Today I'm playing Secretary. Or whatever... I remember my "lines" like "thank you for calling, blah blah blah." You don't have to be loud, just imagine everyone in their underware. Just pretend you're talking to us. You'll do great.

I'm so sorry for you, Anika, trying to stuff the spirit of Pippi Longstocking into cross-trainers and black pants "of a polyester and cotton blend." UGH! What a perverse assignment! But this is a costume you're assembling for a character life's calling on you to play-act at this point in your life.

I've been there. I can inter-act with these college Provosts and Presidents when I put the right costume & get into the right character--then go home and "wash the greasepaint off."

You can do this, dear Anika. YOU will always be the essential you under it all.

Dont sweat the small stuff hun Like Roadie and DH said, grab your costume and assume a role. Thats the best way to get thru any job. You dont have to command any alpha what what in a company. See someone you recognize or take a liking to? Have a few words with them, so they know you're approachable. Yes, 'quiet' does get horribly misread, thats why I said that... Oh, and if it helps any, write 'social' into the character you'll play at work. And if social is too 'big' for now, add 'friendly'

That sounds like an exciting place to work. I also snowboard! I hope you have a little bit of fun working there. You seem to care a lot about this job which I think other people will pick up on and is a good thing! good luck

Girl you are having the classic case of the nerves you get before starting a new job. It happens to all of us. It is completely normal. You will do just fine, just be yourself. You are such a wonderful person, how could people not like you? You are so pleasant, you never have a negative thing to say. I sure hope you find the pants you need. I found some shoes when I was working that went well with black pants by dr scholls (sp) at WalMart. They were prob under 20 but were black and looked kinda dressy but were super compfy. Best pair of shoes I ever bought for the money.
Certainly they will provide proper training, afterall they want you to do a good job just as much as you want to do one. Just breathe, try some of your meditation for a few minutes and calm yourself. Its going to be okay. You will do just fine. I have great faith in you.

ugggh thank you guys, I am going into this a bit blind, I don't even know if they pair you up of you go alone. Yup typical nerves, haven't had to do this in 7 years.

I found some pants YEEEEES!!! No Ears either DH, I totally know what you are talking about! So I feel a little calmer. The last store I went in too, I started to get desperate enough that I even scouted out the boys section in walmart haha. I am glad it did not come to that.

I still have to go back out there and find shoes. Walmart had some, oh but not in size 5. That's ok shoes should be easier.

I practiced my power poses while I was shopping, standing up tall, head high, taking up space. I have been trying to work on my body language for a while, cause my usual body language is small, compact, hunched, head down, don't talk to me, or see me, kinda thing. I will never be really outgoing, but I will try to act the part a little. Ok I never took drama class, I am probably not a great actor, you guys are right, I will just try to assume the role. And try to remember that I can be likeable, and am competent.

Thank you guys, I'll just put my polyester cotton blend pants, with my cross trainers on in the morning, put on a big smile, and remember what you guys said. And try not to think about wearing cross trainers with dress pants, I will pretend they are yoga pants..so I don't feel so awkward. I can't remember the last time I wore dress pants... sunday school maybe.

You guys are great! I love you! You are too sweet to me! I'll do some yoga tonight, eat a good meal, pack a good lunch, and get a good sleep.

Roadie, hehe I am gonna think about pippi all day, what would pippi do, she would pick that horse right up twirl it over her head, and say something like "“But dress pants aren't dangerous, they don't bite anybody except in self defense.”

I was thinking, you should use your yoga. You know, your power. Yoga is your power. Like envision your chakras all lined up, glowing light right out the top of your head. This will keep you standing tall. And then flowing down into the earth, your roots. Wings and tail, I always say. Keep your wings up and your tail down. No matter how small you are, you'll seem big but in a positive way.

Like in that picture you posted for us. That's how I see you.

I think you could call HR and ask what their training process is. That may calm your nerves a little

Thank you so much Christina, IZ, Tricia, Hammy, .... yes calling HR would have been smart, I better work on that that's a good idea. Thank you Tricia, nice to meet another snowboarder.

I just had a realization, while putting lotion on after my shower. My uniform top is supposed to be short sleeved and They give you a uniform top to go over, short sleeved. Ok I have tattoos all over my arms, large, one entire forearm from wrist to elbow, and the other whole inside of the forearm, another one my upper arm, but that wouldn't be seen. Then there is another near my eye, and yes another around my neck.

I have a feeling my bf forgot to mention that to HR, and I forget they are even there. I hope it is not going to be a problem, but one on my arm has fetuses, nothing terrible.. it's like a henna design for my kids, and the one on my neck is large stitches, like decapitation, but not gory it's not. The one near my eye is very small. oh noo's I can't believe I didn't think about that! These hiring people have not met me yet. OMGZzzzzz that is what I *should* have been stressing over.

(((Anika))) Your boyfriend wouldn't have helped get you the job at the place if some tatts were gonna be a problem. Also, they've already hired you! They'll have a heck of a time firing you now. Ski resorts always have such a variety of people working at them. Lots of alternative type people, lots of foreignors, people liking to travel. You're going to do great. I used to clean at a resort up in Puget Sound, it was a very hippy clothing optional place, lol. Hey, you could bring a book with you, in case you feel awkward at break time - you'd have something to do, or look like you are doing.

Thanks Blue! Oh boy, I hope so. I I texted him, he said he forgot, and that he wasn't sure if it would be a problem, he's been there for almost a decade, and he seems stressed about it too. So I guess we will see. I will take a long sleeved shirt in case. And if it's a real problem, well not too much I can do about it really. Can't go wash them off.

I looked at the manual, in the blurb about the importance of grooming and hygiene. All it says it small body piercings are ok. Ok well I'll just cross my fingers, I should have bought pants with extra polyester!

Can you wear a short sleeve with long sleeve under it? People need to get over the tattoo thing, seriously. Where I work almost everyone has a tattoo and no one can show it. It's dumb.

We also have to hide our tattoos, and we dont even SEE or smell clients! Makes no sense. Tough luck, I'm getting 2 more anyway, its not like its on openly visible places... Let us know how it goes Anika. A long sleeved top under the uniformed shirt is a good idea...

I have a big tattoo of a fairy in a flower on my arm. I always have to wear 3/4 sleeves or long sleeves at work. It's a pain. But everyone from the executive assistant to the head of HR has a tattoo... it's really crazy. I keep hoping that soon tattoos will be so popular or so many people have them that it doesn't matter any more. I keep hoping the "image" of professionalism changes.

I'd like to hear how everything went today for you, Anika. I keep hoping it all goes really well!
