My pdoc told me that I can take my zyprexa as needed. Is this true? I'm currently taking 2.5mg but now after talking with my dad I'm stopping the zyprexa until I feel manic again.

I take Zyprexa on a PRN basis now. I was on it for about four months for mania that just wouldn't stop, but I gained about 20 lbs. practically overnight and my blood sugar shot up dramatically. Now I use it only when I'm in really bad shape, which I have been lately.

DrSkipper, 2.5 mg is the smallest dose Zyprexa comes in. So you are already at the lightest level possible, and it should be no trouble to switch to the PRN basis from here. I occasionally take Zyprexa as a sleep medicine. Very occasionally. I am now hoping that it will help me sleep during a long flight - it is a good sleep medicine, after all.
I think PRN is the way to go with Zyprexa, because as a maintenance treatment it causes too much weight gain - the most of all AP's. Plus, as BipolaRNurse indicated, it can really mess up your blood sugar. As an occasional PRN drug, it does nothing bad to my blood sugar which is borderline low. I take as much as 10 mg - just infrequently. Congratulations! It is a good step forward. |

I take zyprexa 15mg a day. I gained weight but I think its' mostly my diet cause have been eating bad. I think zyprexa has been the med that has most helped keep me stable and keep me from being in a rage or irritable, or angry. It's made a difference.
