I'm headed to see the doctor in about an hour and I'm ashamed to say that I'm freaking out a little bit about it. Not counting the visits regardinng being pregnant and having my daughter I have gone to see a doctor a grand total of about twice in my adult life.

What's she going to say? What are they going to do? What are they going to put me on? Will it make me feel better? I've never been put on medication. How will I react? Will I like it? Will I regret not going sooner?

I just need to stop thinking so much I think.

Sometimes they start out on a low dose to see how you tolerate it, then increase it to the dose that works for your needs. All depends on what's going no with you.
Just be completely honest and report any odd or unpleasant reactions. Remember, you're a team ... You aren't a lab rat. You and your doctor are equals, and the goal is the best possible meds for you--not just something that's "good enough" to get by.
Relax. It's going to be fine.

it's ALWAYS tumoil and anxiety and fear with the first couple of doctors visits. I remember mine very well. I was in a hurry. I was along the thought process of,

"You found out what was wrong with me, now lets hurry up and treat it and make it go away. You told me that there is treatment for it. You told me that i don't have to live like this anymore, and now you tell me to wait weeks before doing anything about it! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I'm going to rip out my hair waiting around. just fix me already!!!"

This is actually a special time for you. You will see that later. Just try to go slow and take it all in.

Well its good your going to the doctor. Im glad to hear that. But dont worry so much. It wont be bad they are here to help you. And you are in total control of your treatment plan.

Take a step back and take things one step at a time. The most important thing is for you to have a clear understanding. The provider should explain things to you then discuss options.

Thanks everyone! The appointment went fairly decently, but since it was only with a family doctor (who I really don't think has much experience in dealing with mental illness) she said that she's going to wait to proceed with any medications until I meet with my psychologist on the 12th. (That and she expressed that she'd be more comfortable putting me on one medication at a time and I, just today, was also diagnosed officially with hypertension. Awesome.)

Until then, my diagnosis according to them is an "unspecified episodic mood disorder". Really? I mean, really?? Let's just call a spade, a spade. Come on. Whatever... moving on... </momentary rage>

There was about a 10 minute stretch during the appointment where she went on and on about needing to be in a "controlled, safe environment" so that I can get well. And because I live in a different county from where her office was located at, she offhandedly mentioned that I'd be in my home county's mental hospital system rather than the one she worked with. I was convinced she was sending me to a hospital. Like... I would have put money on it, and I'm not a gambling person at all.

In short, no, she didn't send me to the hospital, and I have to wait two weeks until I see the psychologist. Everything is headed in the right direction, it's just taking SO long to get there. :/

Is she sure you have hypertension and you weren't just nervous over your appointment?

My husband (paramedic) has been monitoring it since my daughter was born. I had to be induced early because of blood pressure concerns at the time. And for the past two years it's consistantly been high. It also runs in my family so I really was expecting it.
