Some of the members here referred me to trying Geodon since it won't cause weight gain, and my pdoc finally approved me to trying it.

She told me that lithium can also cause weight gain which I found surprising, but I think that the cravings have been due to the zyprexa.

I am not sure what I should be expecting with the Geodon. She told me the possible side effects, but I am not sure how I will actually be affected by it. How has the Geodon worked and not worked with you?

I'm only on a tiny dose of Geodon, but it seems to have pulled together the rest of my mind and my underlying mood has been very stable for the past couple of months. I haven't gained weight, my blood sugar levels haven't gone up, nor do I have food cravings like I did on Zyprexa. It's been a good drug for me, if a LOT expensive (the generic version costs me $165 per 30 day supply). I think it's well worth trying.

Wow, I had no idea how much they charge for it.

I'm on copay so it only costs me $10.

Do you notice any drowsiness or side effects?

It's a 20mg tablet and I'm taking one in the morning and one at night, and then after a week with no intolerance I can take two at night, though the pdoc said it's meant to be split up morning and night.

edit: I like your signature.

I couldn't sleep on it. Would take hours to fall asleep and wake up at 3am. Doctor didn't believe me as this is an "unheard of" side effect. Funny how when I stopped it I could sleep again. But apparently insomnia is indeed a rare side effect so you probably won't have to worry about it.

Hi,
I don't take Geodon but have a friend that does. I saw her yesterday and she was so stabilized that she glows. LOL.
I was really happy that Geodon is working for her. I take Lithium and I think it caused weight gain. I'll be possible changing to Geodon too.

20 mg is a tiny dose. If it helps at this low level, fantastic.

I had complete unorgasmia at high doses (above 100 mg).
At 80 mg, I technically had orgasms but I had no sexual fantasy/ideation/desire or anything like that. Just could technically, mechanistically have orgasms.
Had to go off of it completely to resume being a sexual being.
But it is a fairly rare side effect - on this forum, only one woman besides me has had it (and, I am afraid, still has it) - PM me and I will tell you her userid so that you can search her posts. She has posted on Geodon-induced side effects quite a lot.
Hopefully, you won't run into this side effect because it is terrible.

What is the difference between sleepy and drowsy?

I had a yawning spell today but it didn't seem to be drowsiness, just sleepiness. I know drowsiness is something to look for in the Geodon but what does it mean to be drowsy?

drow·sy
/ˈdrouzē/
Adjective
Sleepy and lethargic; half asleep.

sleep·y
/ˈslēpē/
Adjective
Needing or ready for sleep.

I think the real difference for you is that "drowsy" is an established term. When you read the list of side effects of most medications, you would most likely happen upon a mention of "drowsy", but not "sleepy".

In other words, "sleepy" is in Plain English.
"drowsy" is a medical term.

Other than that, no real difference.

I do still have sexual side effects from Geodon. Next month I am being taken off of it completely. On a higher dose I would fall asleep during the daytime if just sitting in a chair. I wish you luck with Geodon though because not everyone has the same side effects.

I've been on Geodon since Aug 2010, when I landed in the hospital. I think it's a great drug, I'm not hallucinating any more and the voices are completely gone. I take 20 mg at lunch, and 160 mg at night. Just make sure you go titrate slowly. I was on geodon back in 2009, and my pdoc then went up on the dose too quick and I had a seizure. Not fun.

I don't have any side effects from it, and with being on lamictal and tegretol with it, I have been able to lose 20 lbs. So being on weight neutral drugs is pretty important to me.
