So, I just recently found out that I'm anemic and today, it's hitting me pretty badly. I am dizzy when I stand, feel like I'm going to pass out and I feel like puking. It's really bad today and I'm supposed to work in a few hours.

Well, I have literally asked EVERYONE who I could, to cover for me, and no one will. The only person who might be able to, is not replying back to my texts or answering her phone. She ignores you when she doesn't want to work and I"m really desperate. I even told her I'd work for her on Friday but she isn't responding back.

My boss is making me come in unless I can find someone, but I just... I can't do it! Anytime I stand, the room starts spinning. Isn't it a hazard to have someone come in when something like this is happening?

If I get hurt from passing out at work, then she has to deal with it.

I am crying right now, because it feels like my life sucks right now. On top of it all, this girl who I knew would do it for me, is already working for this guy who just DOES NOT want to work his shifts. He probably could work today, so he's taking away from someone who really needs their shift covered.

I'm so upset right now. I just.... I don't know what to do.

doesn't the doctor know you're anemic? That s a pretty bad thing to have especially if your responsibilities are urgent. You could hurt someone with out wanting to.

Do you know the cause of the anemia? Doctor's note? Check labor laws re: what your boss is doing? Sounds like there is more to the story.

Well, shoot. I probably just screwed my career there. I probably just did because I didn't go in today, but it is NOT fair. I do not think it's fair at all. And I don't think I can talk to my parents about this, because they are going to get upset with me. I'll have to try to talk to my mom... If she's calm enough today.

But this isn't fair at all. Do you know why? This is what she told me.

"This will be your 5th time calling in."

F***. No. It's my fifth time not being able to make a shift, and out of the 5 times now, I have only ever not gotten someone to cover my shift TWO times. So, if everyone else can miss work and have someone cover for them, especially this one guy, who never comes to his shifts in the first place, why is it... When I do it, I get in trouble? And on top of that... The first two times I was sick, I had a fever. They SENT me home. That wasn't my choice. They SENT me home. I didn't ask for it, they DID IT THEMSELVES. They took my temp there, and it was above 100 degrees. I already had someone covering for me on the day after, which was good, because I was still sick with a fever that day.

Well, the second two times, I had another fever. I'm a rule follower. That's all I do. I follow the rules, especially there because I don't want to mess up (which ended up happening anyways). They have a strict policy, do not come into work with a fever because it's a nursing home and I work in food. I could kill residents if I had something they could catch. So, I was just doing what they told me. I told my boss I had a fever and got someone to cover for me. She said that was okay, as long as you have someone covering for you.

Well, now, as I said, she said "this is your 5th time calling in. 6 times is when disciplinary action is taken."

What the f*** is that about? So why is it... The others can do it as much as they want, as long as they get someone to cover for them, and I do the same thing, getting someone to cover for me, that I AM GETTING IN TROUBLE FOR IT?

It makes absolutely no sense to me at all. It's is entirely unfair.

I'm sorry for the rant and the swearing... I just had to get that out.

And I know why I'm anemic, we're working on it now. And I'm thinking I will get a doctor's note, because this is just ridiculous.

Getting a doctor's note is probably the best thing you can do for your work, Hydrophobic. If you're sick, you definitely shouldn't be in that environment. (In fact, you may be getting repeated bouts of sickness partly because of the patients' illnesses being spread around through the air vents, for goodness sake.)

I'd look for another job if it continues.

I hope the anemia is being corrected rapidly.

Thank you, genetic. I am already considering looking for another job... I've been seeing some unfair treatment with some of my friends there as well... I don't think it's a good environment and I've been hearing some bad things about it from others too...
And I'm taking care of the anemia, yes. :3

And thank you, Shattered. I'm just... A mess right now. I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm being treated unfairly... I haven't called in 5 times...

Sorry this happened .. This is the way of nursing homes and how they deal with employee illness and shifts being covered and it will always be this way, sadly enough.

Feel better

From experience, I can say Nursing Homes/LTC are stressful places to be---sometimes (not always) it helps to sit down with someone in HR to clarify policies etc---clearly some of the pressure/anxiety is exacerbated by your mother's response. Does she work there also? (just wondered because you say she told you how many times till action is taken etc.)-----life isn't fair, but don't second guess the reasons others may call in etc., you never really know---focus on what is good for you. And it might well be a different job, I"m sure they aren't paying you so well that you can't afford to move on. JUST saw your post re: potential new job--GOOD FOR YOU!

My boss is the one who told me about the steps they take, so no my mother doesn't work there.
And I know for a fact, that one of the people who calls in just doesn't want to go. My friend lives with him, and so she witnesses it firsthand. He's sinking his own ship.
And yes, thank you! I really want it. It's in line therapy. It'll be good for my degree.
