So I have been on lamictal for bipolar type 2 for 2 weeks and trileptal for violent thoughts and tendecies for about a week now. I have done research on both meds, and I see they are seizure meds, no wonder this **** has not been working. Is this some kind of test psychiatrists do on there patients? Does she think I'm ********ing? I don't need seizure medicine, I need medicine to keep me from having thoughts about laying in my ex girlfriends bushes and waiting for her to come outside, or ****ing torturing people like in midevil times. I'm so pissed right now, why the hell would this woman give me seizure medicine. **** I feel like punching holes in the wall. People say trileptal also helps bipolar 1, so what the **** is it? Am I bipolar 2 or 1? I sure as hell don't have seizures. Sorry about the rant. But I'm not a ****ing seizure doll.

Anti-convulsants are often used as mood stabilizers as well. It seems to be an unbelievable connection (that between a mood disorder and a neurological disorder), but it is what it is.

Lamictal is very commonly given as a first line treatment for bipolar 2. It is FDA approved for Bipolar 1, but this does not make you bipolar 1. Rather, often psychiatric meds are used for indications other than their FDA approved ones because it's extremely expensive and not worth the drug manufacturer's time and money to run clinical trials in order to qualify the medication for a new official indication.

You are not a "seizure doll." Calm down, because you are, in fact, on medication suitable for bipolar disorder.

Yes, I am on Lamictal for Bipolar II and also on Abilify which is an atypical-antipsychotic. They work for this illness.

I also am on other seizure meds like Neurontin and others and they work!

Do some more research on which meds are used for bipolar and you will see there are vast amounts of meds which can be used for bipolar and there will be many others to try if this on doesn't work for you. We are lucky to have so many to pull from!!!!

Most mood stabilizers are also seizure medications. Many of the same medications are used for Bipolar I and II. I'd talk to your psychiatrist about treatment so you can work as a team; it's sounding like a pretty adversarial relationship.

Trileptal's use in Bipolar is off label (it is not FDA approved for bipolar).

The evidence for Trileptal in bipolar is weak.

There are seizure medications that are FDA approved for Bipolar - Lamictal, Depakote, Tegretol, ...

Some of the benefits (potential benefits) of Trileptal are speculative and derive from its similarity to Tegretol, which has been shown to be effective. The case for Trileptal stems from its better side effects profile, compared to Tegretol. So if one combines the belief that Trileptal would deliver benefits similar to Tegretol due to their structural similarity, but without so many bad side effects, one can be led to trying Trileptal.

It is not the first line of defense, though.
